An important turning point in the two countries’ history of aerial conflict was the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. In September 1965, it was the first time when India and Pakistan were involved in aerial combat conducting thousands of offensive and defensive missions over Indian and Pakistani airspace.

Both India and Pakistan declared victory as the air war continued, although each gave different explanations for the harm done to the other. India claimed to have destroyed 73 Pakistani aircraft and lost 35, while Pakistan claimed that it had destroyed 104 Indian planes and lost 19 of its own. Notwithstanding these divergent assertions, neither side was able to secure a clear victory, and the air battle finally came to a standstill.
Many factors played different roles and contributed to the outcome of the Indo-Pakistani War in 1965, making it a complicated and multidimensional struggle. Both sides suffered heavy casualties in what was the worst tank fight and armored vehicle confrontation since World War II. The conflict also had far-reaching geopolitical ramifications, changing the dynamics of India-Pakistan ties and causing a major shift in the regional balance of power.

It was in 1979 when the Pakistani Air Force commissioned British author John Fricker to publish a book on the battle from a Pakistani point of view. According to Fricker’s research, the body of Devayya was discovered by villagers close to Sargodha, buried, and relatively intact.

Due to this new information, the IAF reexamined Devayya’s case and, in 1988, gave him the Maha Vir Chakra posthumously, which is still the only one the IAF has given. Nearly 23 years after the battle, Mrs. Devayya accepted the honor on behalf of her late husband. In the following years, Devayya’s legacy was further honored when the Kodava Makkada Koota erected a statue in his honor and named the private bus stand circle in Madikeri, Kodagu, after him in 2009. Sadly, a bus struck the statue in 2023, causing damage and raising the possibility of intentional vandalism.
