Pune railway station is set for a major transformation. The station will undergo a ₹442-crore infrastructure upgrade aimed at increasing train-handling capacity and improving passenger facilities. The station currently has six platforms and handles around 150 trains every day. Platforms 7/8, 9/10 and 11/12 are being developed as part of the expansion. The new platforms will be supported by infrastructure such as foot overbridges, a skywalk, lifts and escalators.
Passenger amenities will also be improved as part of the work. Existing platforms will be extended so they can accommodate full-length train formations. At present, only two platforms at the station can handle full-length coach trains. ₹202 Crore Allocated For Passenger Facilities
A significant portion of the project has been earmarked for passenger amenities. Around ₹202.39 crore has been sanctioned for customer facilities. Of this amount, ₹129.57 crore will be used for the new platforms and associated passenger infrastructure. Existing platforms will also receive upgrades. Around ₹37.12 crore has been allocated for improvements such as flooring, painting, toilets and drainage.
The plans also include a permanent passenger holding area and a new parcel office. These additions are aimed at improving the overall passenger experience while also addressing operational requirements at the busy station.
₹239 Crore For Yard Remodelling
Another major component of the project is the redevelopment of the railway yard. Around ₹239.64 crore has been allocated for traffic infrastructure and yard remodelling. The work includes additional platform lines and new stabling tracks. A third main line between Pune and Hadapsar is also part of the plan. Several existing platforms will be extended as part of the wider redevelopment.
The railway yard will also be upgraded from the existing 52-kg rail layout to a stronger 60-kg layout. This will form part of the infrastructure improvements designed to support growing railway operations in the Pune region.
Advanced Electronic Interlocking System Planned
The signalling system at the station will also undergo a major change. The existing route relay interlocking system will be replaced with an advanced electronic interlocking system. The new system is designed to improve operational safety by preventing conflicting train movements. It will also allow railway authorities to manage train movements more efficiently.
Signal and telecommunications infrastructure will be upgraded along with overhead equipment. These works are an important part of the yard redevelopment and will support the expanded train-handling capacity.
Pune Station Upgrade Expected To Take 3 Years
Railway officials expect the development projects under the Pune division to take around three years to complete. The new platforms will become operational after the associated infrastructure is ready. This includes works related to foot overbridges and circulating areas.

A separate Mega Coaching Terminal is planned at Alandi. The facility is expected to have nine platforms and 17 stabling lines.
