It was supposed to be just another high-profile lunch, but when Donald Trump met with Pakistan’s Army Chief General Asim Munir, history came knocking. With a single biting remark—”Forgotten Osama already?”—Congress MP Shashi Tharoor revived haunting memories of Pakistan’s role in sheltering the world’s most wanted terrorist. The question now isn’t just who eats with whom, but what we choose to remember and what we conveniently forget.

Shashi Tharoor: Gave A Warning On Trusting Pakistan

Recall Osama bin Laden, the terrorist leader of Al-Qaeda, who was found hiding close to a Pakistan Army Camp and was responsible for the 2001 World Trade Center Attack that claimed almost 3,000 lives.

After recommending Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, Munir was invited to the White House for lunch. Following President Donald Trump’s lunch with General Asim Munir, the head of the Pakistan Army, on Wednesday, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor sent a clear warning to the American people.

The warning was clearly stated: do not put your trust in a dishonest Pakistani government that sheltered the mastermind of the biggest terrorist attack and encourages terrorist attacks against India.

“I hope the food was good and he gets some food for thought in the process,” Tharoor remarked, making fun of Munir for going to this dinner with Trump. He said,

“The US public could not have forgotten the Osama incident so rapidly, but several senators and congressmen who met with the Pakistani team did. The Americans cannot so readily overlook Pakistan’s responsibility for concealing this man until he was found close to an Army camp.”

When asked about the Trump-Munir meeting, Tharoor responded, “I haven’t seen the outcome of the meeting.”

Shashi Tharoor emphasized that the United States should use such meetings to reinforce the message that Pakistan must not support terrorism. “I would hope that in these interactions with the Americans, they would also remind Pakistan of the great importance of not supporting terrorism, of not providing safe havens for terrorists, of not enabling, guiding, training, arming, financing, equipping, and dispatching terrorists to our country,” he said.

Munir’s Statement Before The Pahalgam Attack

Due to General Munir’s previous aggressive comments on India, the meeting grew even more controversial. Munir had referred to Kashmir as Pakistan’s “jugular” and described Pakistanis as having a “superior culture” in comparison to Indians, only days before the terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives.

In India, those comments were greeted with incredulity and anger. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar accused Munir of inciting the violence and hatred that resulted in the Pahalgam killings because of his “extreme religious outlook.”

Shashi Tharoor remarked on the 35-minute phone call between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the latter’s message, saying, “If there was any pressure from Trump, it would have only been on Pakistan.” The scheduling of the Trump-Munir lunch has also drawn criticism in India.

The day after Mr. Trump’s telephone conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, General Munir was to visit the White House. Speaking at the G7 Summit in Canada, Mr. Modi was also invited to the White House but turned it down for apparent reasons.

The Prime Minister made it clear to President Trump over the phone that India would never want outside intervention to settle the dispute over Pakistan’s unlawful possession of Kashmir.

The forceful declaration came after Mr. Trump made repeated claims that he had negotiated Operation Sindoor’s termination. This occurred even though India made it apparent that Pakistan was the one who requested the ceasefire.

He noted that the delegation “gave exactly the message that the Prime Minister has given to the President,” and rejected suggestions of third-party intervention, adding: “Mediation implies equivalence. There is no equivalence between terrorists and their victims.”
