Imagine being just 22 years old and already having access to top-level government systems. That’s exactly what’s happening with Akash Bobba, a young Indian-origin engineer who has been handpicked by Elon Musk to be part of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Along with five other young engineers, Bobba is now working on modernizing government operations—a move that has sparked a lot of debate.
Who Is Akash Bobba?

Akash Bobba was a student at UC Berkeley and also part of the Management, Entrepreneurship, and Technology (MET) program, which was essentially a course for future technology leaders. He spent his college interning with some of the world’s largest companies: Meta, Palantir, and Bridgewater Associates. There, he dabbled in AI, data analytics, and financial modeling, making him a problem-solver. One of his former classmates even shared a crazy story about him:
“I once accidentally deleted our entire project two days before the deadline. I panicked, but Akash just looked at the screen, shrugged, and rewrote everything from scratch overnight—better than before. We submitted early and got first in the class.”
This kind of mindset and skillset helped him land a place in Musk’s elite DOGE team, which is now working on revamping outdated government systems.

Here’s the thing—Bobba and his team have almost no government experience. Yet, they now hold key positions in agencies like the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and the General Services Administration (GSA). Reports say some of them even have top-tier security clearances, which means they have access to highly sensitive government data.
This has raised concerns among critics, who argue that putting fresh college grads in charge of critical government operations is risky. Some say it could lead to security issues if not handled properly. Others believe Musk is cutting through bureaucracy and bringing in real talent instead of people who just know “how to play politics.”
What Is DOGE?

No, this is not Dogecoin. DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) is Elon Musk’s new project to make government processes faster, smarter, and more tech-driven. The idea here is to replace slow, archaic systems with AI and automation, just as Tesla runs its factories.
The DOGE team includes engineers as young as 19, some still in college, and others who previously worked at SpaceX. Musk’s goal is to completely transform government tech, but whether this will actually work or not is still a big question mark.
What’s Next For Akash Bobba?

Right now, Bobba is listed as an “expert” at OPM, working under Amanda Scales, who was previously with xAI and Uber. He reportedly has full clearance to access government IT systems, which is a huge deal for someone his age.
While some are excited about young minds bringing fresh ideas into government, others are worried about how much power they have been given so quickly.
So, is Akash Bobba a tech genius revolutionizing government operations, or is this just a risky experiment by Musk? That’s something only time will tell.
