Vijender Singh Becomes WBO Asia-Pacific Champion

Indian boxing superstar Vijender Singh created history when became the WBO Asia Pacific super middleweight champion after beating Australian boxer Kerry Hope in their title bout in New Delhi on Saturday night. Vijender won by unanimous decision after all three judges ruled in his favor after the 10 round-bout. With the win, Vijender became the second ever Indian to hold a WBO international title after Neeraj Goyat who won the title in welterweight category.

Vijender was aggressive right from the word go and baffled the Australian boxer who could only showcase his famed skills in bits and pieces. Though the Indian boxer could deliver a knock-out punch, he was successful in taking his winning streak to 7-0 as a pro boxer.

In an event attended by prominent Indian personalities like Rahul Gandhi, Yuvraj Singh, Randeep Huda, Rannvijay sangha amongst many others, Vijender won the bout without any hassle. He looked a bit emotional after his win and thanked the countrymen for unconditional support.

The road to title, however, has not been easy for the amateur-turned-pro boxer who rose to fame following his inspiring performance in Beijing Olympics where he won a Bronze Medal. He had sustained a shoulder injury in a match against Hungarian boxer Anthony Alexander Horvath, who had tweeted a picture of himself drinking snake blood in order to acquire supernatural powers. His supernatural powers definitely eluded him as he was knocked out in the fourth round by the flamboyant Indian boxer from Bhivani, Haryana.
