When it is about the survival, the humans can go to any level. There are incidents that prove this situation. Moreover, everyone is familiar about Bear Grylls of “Man vs Wild”. However, these kinds of situations happen also in the reality when man has to eat the human flesh in order to survive. A similar situation happened for a rugby team of Uruguay in 1972 when the team was stuck in minus thirty-degree temperature and the players had nothing to eat. It is also known as the Andes flight disaster.
Journey Of The Rugby Team
On October 13, 1972, the Rugby team of a domestic club (Old Christian Club) of Uruguay was going to play in Chile’s Santiago. However, their journey was interrupted by the bad weather that caused their plane to crash. Due to the crash, 12 people out of 45 eventually died.
Worse Than Death
Other 17 died after a brief struggle in the low temperature. Somehow, the life was worse than death for the people who survived. They had to feed on the corpse of their dead friends. Dr. Robotra Kanesa said in an interview, “I had to eat the meat of my own friend to stay alive.”
Had Eaten Flesh From The Dead
The other edible things were distributed among the survivors but soon the food lasted and they eat the flesh from the dead bodies. It was the courage and the will to survive of those people that kept them alive.
They managed a way to get the water by melting the snow. But they knew that the end was near if they did not make a move. Hence, two of the players showed courage. Despite being physically and mentally weak, they managed to cross the Andes Mount to reach the populated areas. From there they were able to send help for the others and to save them. At the end, the remaining 16 people were rescued on 23 December 1972 from the Andes flight disaster.
Movie And Book To Tell Their Survival Story
There was also a book titled as ‘Alive’ written in 1974. Moreover, a movie was made in 1993 with the same title to depict the courage, struggle and survivor instincts of the survivors of the Andes flight disaster.
