The victim, a 29-year-old man, had only recently moved to Pune for a job two months prior, so he was unfamiliar with the city. “He is staying with us at Vishrantwadi and works with an electronics company in Mhalunge MIDC. He uses his uncle’s bike to reach Bhosari, from where he boards the bus meant for the company staffers,” The victim’s brother-in-law commented.

According to a Times of India report, on July 20th, the victim was returning home from work when a man approached him for help. The man, about 25 years old, told the victim he needed money to return to Buldhana. He received Rs 500 from the unwitting victim via a UPI transaction and then asked to borrow his phone so he could make a quick call. The victim gave the man permission to use his cell phone, but he soon regretted it when the man took off with it before he could take any action to stop him.
