President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu will be launching Frigate ‘Vindhyagiri.’ According to the Indian navy, the Frigate will be launched in Kolkata on August 17. When Will Vindhyagiri Be Launched?
Vindhyagiri will be launched on August 17, 2023, by President Murmu. Furthermore, it will be launched at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE), Kolkata. The navy says, “Vindhyagiri, a technologically advanced Frigate, pays a befitting tribute to the distinguished service of its predecessor, the erstwhile INS Vindhyagiri.”
It further says, “The newly christened Vindhyagiri stands as a symbol of India’s determination to embrace its rich naval heritage while propelling itself towards a future of indigenous Defence capabilities.”
Under this project 17A program, four ships by Mumbai-based Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and three ships by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE) are under construction.
However, the first five ships of the project were launched by MDL and GRSE between 2019-2022. The INS Vindhyagiri was the sixth and last of the Nilgiri class frigates. It has completed nearly 31 years of service from July 8, 1981, to June 11, 2012. Moreover, the ship has seen many multinational exercises and performed maritime surveillance, coastal patrol, and anti-piracy operations.
What Is The Project 17A Program?
The Project 17A ships have been designed in-house by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau. Moreover, as much as 75% of the orders of Project 17A ships are from indigenous firms, including MSMEs. The navy also said, “The warship are follow-ons of the project 17 class Frigates (Shivalik Class), with improved stealth features, advanced weapons, and sensors and platforms management system.”
Further added, “The launch of Vindhyagiri is an apt testament to the incredible progress our nation has made in building a self-reliant naval force.”
