She was left with nothing — no name, no home, nothing. It was an ordinary morning in Navi Mumbai — until a local resident discovered a blue colored basket near their gate. Inside it: a newborn baby girl, abandoned but miraculously alive — silent, helpless, and surrounded by questions. But what truly broke hearts was the note left with her: just one word — “Sorry.”

This isn’t just a story of abandonment — it’s a story that raises urgent questions about motherhood. Who left her? Why was she abandoned? And what happens to her now?

On June 29 in Mumbai, a three-day-old newborn girl was found abandoned in a basket in Navi Mumbai, with her parents leaving a note apologizing and stating their inability to raise her due to their poor financial situation, police said on Sunday.

The girl was placed in a plastic basket and dumped on the street outside Takka colony in Panvel early Saturday morning. A note written in English was also found in the basket, in which the newborn’s parents claimed their financial condition was not sound, due to which they would not be able to raise the child.

The girl’s parents also expressed “sorry” in the note because they couldn’t do anything else, according to the official. Seeing the seriousness of the matter, the police filed a case at Panvel Town police station under Section 93 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (exposing and abandoning a child under the age of twelve years by a parent or someone caring for the child).

The police carried the newborn child to a pediatrician, who examined her and determined she was stable, they added.

The official stated that the police were looking for the girl’s parents. Teams from the Navi Mumbai Crime Branch started a parallel inquiry into the case. Because there were no eyewitnesses, the Crime Branch team analyzed CCTV footage from the area, while another team sought technical aid. During the investigation, it was discovered that the baby was taken to the area in a vehicle that was tracked down to the accused father in Bhiwandi, the official said.

The letter expressed deep sorrow and regret from the parents, who said they had no other option. “We have no other option. We can’t manage anything for this baby mentally and financially,” the note read. They pleaded for the newborn child’s safety, requesting that authorities or residents not involve the police or escalate the matter. “We don’t want her to face whatever we have faced,” it added, hinting at the depth of their personal crisis. Ending with a hopeful line — “I hope we take her back one day” — the note was a silent cry for help, wrapped in guilt, love, and unimaginable pain.

Did The Mother Do The Right Thing?

Whether the mother did the “right” thing is a question that appeals to both the heart and the conscience. Abandoning a child is illegal and harmful, but the situation is not black and white.

The handwritten note depicts a mother or possibly a father who is emotionally and financially unable to care for their newborn, yet desperate enough to leave her wherever she might be noticed securely.

From their perspective, this was not abandonment; it was giving her a better opportunity in life. It represents the failure of a system that provides insufficient help to struggling parents, particularly women facing shame, poverty, or mental health issues. While leaving a child in this manner is never acceptable, the note forces society to reflect: Did the mother fail, or did the world fail her first?
