Indore, already famous for being India’s cleanest city, has reached another impressive milestone. It has now become India’s first city without beggars. District Magistrate Ashish Singh has shared that nearly 5,000 beggars have been held since February 2024. Children have been enrolled in schools, while adults receive training and jobs, completely changing their lives.

Indore chose a different path from most cities. Instead of punishing beggars, officials focused on helping them. They shared awareness programmes and identified people who had come from nearby states like Rajasthan. The city helped these individuals find proper jobs rather than treating them like criminals. This approach, which puts people first, has earned praise from both the Union Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment and the World Bank.

Helping People Instead Of Punishing Them

To support this effort, the city has banned begging, giving money to beggars, and buying things from street beggars. Three police cases have been filed against those who broke these rules. Citizens are encouraged to help maintain this beggar-free status. Anyone who reports information about beggars can receive a thousand-rupee reward, which many residents have already claimed.

Giving Children A Better Future

Among the 5,000 rehabilitated beggars, about 500 were children. These young ones have been given a fresh start through school enrollment and a support system. This not only improves their current situation, but also helps break the cycle of poverty that might continue into the next generation.

Indore Is Setting An Example For Other Cities

Indore’s success stories serve as a model for nine other cities chosen for a similar pilot project by the Union Ministry. City officials emphasize that the campaign is not just about removing beggars from public view but about giving them dignity, purpose, and opportunity. Multiple government departments, including Women and Children’s Development, worked together to achieve this remarkable result.

With this beggar-free status, Indore continues to show leadership in city management. This city has shown that positive social change can happen through kindness, organization, and citizen participation, setting a high standard for inclusive urban development across India.
