Amazon Prime Video India is about to change how you stream — ads are coming, and you'll need to pay extra to avoid them.

Starting June 17, 2025, Amazon Prime Video will begin showing advertisements during movies and TV shows in India. The company announced this major change on Tuesday, following a similar move it made in the United States and other markets last year.

Changes For Amazon Prime Video Users

If you are an Amazon Prime Video Member in India, your streaming experience will change. Amazon will automatically start showing ads during your favorite shows and movies. The company promises these ads will be limited and fewer than what you would see on regular TV or a streaming platform.

The good news? Your Prime membership won’t increase. The standard membership will still cost ₹1499 per year with all the same benefits: Amazon Prime Video, Amazon Music, and other perks.

Don’t want ads? Be ready to pay extra.

If you hate the idea of commercials interrupting your binge-watching sessions, Amazon is offering an option to keep your viewing ad-free. However, it’ll cost you an additional ₹699 per year or ₹129 per month on top of your regular Prime membership.

It means if you want the complete premium experience — all Prime benefits plus ad-free viewing in up to 4K quality — you’ll end up paying up to ₹2798 per year.

How Does This Compare To Other Streaming Services?

The new pricing makes Amazon’s ad-free experience more expensive than other OTT platforms like JioHotstar Premium, but still cheaper than Netflix’s Premium plan, which costs ₹649 monthly for 4K ad-free viewing.

What if you are unhappy with these changes?

If these changes don’t sit well with you, Amazon says you can cancel your membership after the ads kick in and request a partial refund through your account settings. According to Amazon, they are adding advertisements to support continued investment in content. In simple terms, they want to make more money to fund new shows and movies without raising the basic subscription price.

What remains to be seen is how Indian consumers will react to this change. With so many streaming options available now, will they accept the ads, pay up for ad-free viewing, or jump to competitors?
