She broke not just sound barriers, but age-old gender ones too. Meet Avani Chaturvedi — the fearless young woman who rewrote India’s aviation history by becoming the first Indian woman to fly a fighter jet solo. Avani hails from the Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh. Avani’s journey from a modest background to the roaring cockpit of a MiG-21 Bison is nothing short of inspiring. Trained at the prestigious Air Force Academy in Hyderabad, she didn’t just learn how to fly — she soared straight into the nation’s hearts.

India had its first female fighter aircraft pilot in February. Avani Chaturvedi, the Madhya Pradesh-born flying officer, is one of three female officers who were commissioned as fighter pilots in the Indian Air Force in June 2016. On February 19, Chaturvedi became the first woman to fly alone for about 30 minutes over Jamnagar Air Base in a MiG-21 Bison fighter plane.

On Monday, Flying Officer Avani Chaturvedi became the first Indian woman to fly a fighter plane solo, making history. On February 19, Chaturvedi accomplished the feat while piloting a MiG-21 “Bison,” which has a takeoff and landing speed of 340 kmph — almost the fastest in the world.

In her first solo training flight, Chaturvedi piloted a MiG-21 Bison in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Along with Bhawana Kanth and Mohana Singh, Chaturvedi is one of three women who joined the Indian Air Force fighter squadron on June 18, 2016.

It’s interesting to note that the MiG-21 Bison, which Avani Chaturvedi learned to fly, holds the record for the fastest takeoff and landing speeds in the world, at 340 km/h. Avani is from Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district.

Also, Mohana Singh and Bhawana  Kanth have completed their fighter plane training and will soon be ready to fly fighters. In January, all three received training.

Completing basic training in June 2016, the three women were commissioned as flying officers into the fighter stream, first on “an experimental basis” for five years.

Her Army-serving brother serves as an inspiration to Chaturvedi. She joined her college’s Flying Club because she had always desired to conquer the skies.

At the Hyderabad Air Force Academy, Chaturvedi completed her training. She completed her schooling in Deoland, a tiny town in Madhya Pradesh’s Shahdol district. She cleared the Indian Air Force exam after getting her bachelor’s degree in technology from Banasthali University in Rajasthan in 2014.

Avani Chaturvedi’s journey is a testament to where dreams, discipline, and determination can take you — even to the skies. Inspired by her brother’s service in the Army and driven by an unwavering passion for flying, she charted her own path in a male-dominated field. From the quiet lanes of Deoland to the roaring runways of the Indian Air Force, her story proves that no dream is too distant if you have the courage to chase it. As one of the first three women commissioned into the fighter stream, Avani didn’t just make history — she opened the skies for generations of Indian women to follow.

In the roar of her MiG-21, echoes the voice of change — loud, fearless, and unforgettable.
