A tragic aviation disaster has struck Gujarat’s largest city, Ahmedabad, as a London-bound Air India flight, reportedly carrying 242 passengers on board, crashed in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad on Thursday. The incident has sent shock waves across the nation as a rescue operation is still continuing in full swing.

Flight AI171, operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. “At this moment, we are ascertaining the details,” Air India said in a statement posted on X. The airline has confirmed the involvement of its aircraft while investigations are still underway.

Ahmedabad Plane Crash

The Air India plane that was a part of this tragic accident was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, having registration VT-ANB. The twin-aisle jet was not a new one in service, as Air India had been supplied with the twin-aisle jet in 2014.

The most shocking thing about this incident is the destination and the fuel load of the flight. It was fueled up to the maximum so that it could reach its long-haul international flight, which increased the gravity of the post-crash situation.

According to the initial report, the plane had taken off at 1:30 PM, and the crash happened at 1:40 PM. This implies that the aircraft was already in the air, en route to the fatal accident that occurred after about 10 minutes.

Air India Plane Crash Location And Impact

The area of Ahmedabad identified as Meghani Nagar has been said to be the crash site. The plane crashed in a place that is reportedly a residential area on top of a doctor’s hostel building. This increases the seriousness of the situation because residential areas are usually more populated.

The initial response suggests that the crash occurred in the Meghani Nagar area, not far from Ahmedabad airport. The plane is believed to have crashed into the perimeter wall of the airport. Some visuals are so horrifying that we cannot even post. The sad thing is we fear that there will not be any survivor in this fatal Ahmedabad plane crash.

Emergency Responses And Rescue Operations

This aviation emergency has been addressed very rapidly and in a very thorough manner. A lot of black smoke was observed coming out of the crash. Rescue teams and site teams have arrived at the scene. The crash was visually obvious immediately, with images of thick smoke blowing across the site emerging.

On the spot, there are fire brigades, ambulances, and other emergency vehicles working tirelessly to control the situation. The aircraft crashed and caught fire afterwards, and fire tenders were hurried to the scene to contain the fire, fearing all 242 on board were dead. Gujarat’s former Chief Minister Dr Vijay Rupani and 100 others were declared dead.

To recover the bodies, all roads leading to the region have been shut to enable rescue work and uphold security in the region of the crash. This is done to allow the emergency services to work without being impeded and also to maintain the curious onlookers at a safe distance.

Government Response

The incident has drawn immediate action from government officials. The Gujarat Chief Minister has ordered immediate rescue and relief operations, along with establishing a green corridor to ensure smooth movement of emergency services and medical assistance.

Home Minister Amit Shah has also been in contact with the Gujarat CM for coordinating the effort, highlighting the seriousness of the issue.

Passenger Information And Casualty

The Air India plane was flying to London Gatwick with 242 people on board, two pilots, and 10 cabin crew. According to the news reports, there were as many as 242 passengers on board the plane. There were 230 passengers along with 12 crew members, making the total number of people who were a part of this tragedy.

With 242 people onboard, the scale of this tragedy cannot be understated. Rescue operations continue, and the investigation begins. The coming hours and days will be crucial as more information about the cause of the crash and the condition of those on board emerges.
