For many working professionals in Mumbai, the daily commute is one of the most exhausting parts of the day. Packed local trains, heavy traffic, and long travel times often make balancing work and personal life a real challenge. For women, the situation can sometimes be even more demanding as they juggle professional responsibilities along with personal commitments.

To address this issue, the Maharashtra government has introduced a new initiative called “Come Early, Go Early.” Announced on International Women’s Day, the policy allows female government employees in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to adjust their work timings slightly. The aim is simple — reduce commuting stress, improve work-life balance, and create a more supportive work environment for women.

The Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar unveiled on International Women’s Day permits female government workers in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to begin and end work earlier. The change is intended to facilitate commuting, enhance work-life balance, and foster a more encouraging workplace for women.

What Is The “Come Early, Go Early” Program?

The “Come Early, Go Early” policy permits female government employees to modestly alter their work schedules by arriving at work earlier and departing earlier instead of following the standard timetable. Female employees may report to work between 9:15 and 9:45 a.m. under this approach.

How Does Flexible Timing Operate?

The plan allows for up to 30 minutes of flexibility. An employee may leave the office 20 minutes early in the evening, for instance, if she comes 20 minutes ahead of the regular reporting time. One-to-one adjustments are made. Employees must, however, make sure that the modified timetable has no impact on their official duties or productivity.

The difficulty Mumbai women encounter in commuting on a daily basis is one of the policy’s primary reasons.

During peak hours, the city’s transportation system, particularly the Mumbai Suburban Railway, is notorious for being extremely crowded. Every day millions of people depend on these trains which makes rush-hour travel especially stressful.

The government intends to lessen the burden of traveling at the busiest times of the day by permitting women to slightly modify their working schedules.

Where Will The Policy Be Put Into Practice?

Women officials and employees who work in government offices in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) would be covered by the flexible scheduling policy. This covers neighboring districts that are part of the metropolitan area as well as offices under the control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

Are There Any Requirements?

Yes, circumstances requiring immediate response or rigid scheduling will not be covered by the flexibility.

For example, workers could still have to adhere to standard office hours during:

  • Legislative responsibilities
  • Court-related issues
  • Urgent government duties
  • Significant formal gatherings

Maintaining regular work hours will still be required in these situations.

A Greater Plan For Women’s Empowerment

The program, according to the Maharashtra government, is a component of larger initiatives to assist women employed in the public sector. The state has increased maternity benefits for female employees in addition to offering flexible work schedules.

Employees of the government are entitled to 180 days of maternity leave with the option to take more time off at half pay if necessary.

Such regulations, according to officials, will contribute to the development of a more accommodating, encouraging, and welcoming workplace for women in government positions.

Conclusion

The “Come Early, Go Early” initiative reflects an effort by the Maharashtra government to make workplaces more flexible and supportive for women. By allowing female employees to adjust their work schedules slightly, the policy aims to ease commuting pressure in a city known for its demanding travel routines.

If implemented effectively, such initiatives could improve work-life balance and productivity for many employees. In a fast-paced city like Mumbai, even small adjustments to work timings can make a meaningful difference in the daily lives of working women.
