10. Odia – Odisha

Odia which is spoken in Odisha grabs the tenth place in the list. Odia which is an Indo Aryan Eastern language is spoken by 3.21 % of the population in the country at present.

 

9. Gujarati – Gujarat

The state of Gujarat and the union territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu speak Gujarat. Gujarati is spoken by 4.48 % of the population in India.

3. Bengali – West Bengal

Britishers promoted English as the language of administration and of the higher law courts which led eventually made people learn English during their ruling in India making Indians as slaves. The English language is the second most spoken language in the country, used as a tool for business and trade potentially more than for everyday language exchange. Around 10% of India’s population speaks English.

Some people can’t accept the fact and argue blindly that Hindi is a national language. But it’s not. Hindi is a widely spoken language but not the national language. India has no national language. Hindi is spoken in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra, Delhi, and Jharkhand. The percentage of Hindi speakers in India is only 40% of its population.

The population is 1.3 billion, and 60% of the population speaks 29 different native languages.

Some other extensively spoken Indian languages are Punjabi, Maithili, Kashmiri, and Assamese. There are 22 major languages in India, written in 13 different scripts, with over 720 dialects.
