On Friday, 21 July 2023, US President Joe Biden chose Admiral Lisa Franchetti as the Navy’s highest-ranking officer. Franchetti is the first woman to hold this position in the Navy. She was also the first woman to be a part of the joint chiefs of staff. She’s currently the commander of the US naval forces Europe-Africa and the allied joint force command in Naples, Italy. Admiral Lisa Franchetti is currently the vice chief of Naval operations. She has a background as a surface warfare officer with extensive experience in both operational and policy roles. Franchetti has a distinguished career in the Navy and has served it for over 35 years.

Lisa Franchetti has held a large variety of leadership positions and served as a commander of US naval forces in Korea, commander of carrier strike group 9, and commander of carrier strike group 15. She has also served as the director of the Navy staff and as the commander of the US naval war college. If confirmed, Franchetti will take over from Admiral Michael Gilday, who has been the chief of naval operations since 2019. She’s the second woman to achieve four-star admiral.

Admiral Franchetti began her military career after receiving her commission in 1985 through northwestern university’s naval reserve officer training corps program. She earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and holds a master’s degree in organizational management from the University of Phoenix.

Franchetti has been a part of various operations as a first division officer on USS Shenandoah and a navigator and embolization coordinator on the USS Moosebrugger. She even commanded USS Ross and destroyer squadron 2.

On May 6, 2020, Franchetti was nominated as deputy chief of naval operations for warfighting development while keeping her other roles. In April 2022, Franchetti was nominated for promotion to admiral and appointed vice chief of naval operations.

 On July 21, 2023, in a statement, President Joe Biden said that “Franchetti is a trailblazer and a true leader who has shattered glass ceilings and paved the way for the next generation of women in the Navy.” If confirmed, Franchetti will take over from admiral Michael Gilday and be the first woman CNO and female on the joint chiefs of staff.
