On August 3, students protested, claiming that food in the dorm had been prepared with decaying vegetables. After hearing students’ complaints about the hostel’s low-quality meals, the MLA was witnessed making offensive statements. As a result, in the widely circulated video, Chitradurga Congress MLA KC Veerendra is heard stating, “If this happens again, lock up the warden in the room and beat him up if he feeds you rotten vegetables. Don’t worry; I’m there; this is too much. Take all the worms from the rotten vegetables and feed him the same. Then beat him up; all this will be rectified after that. This is not right.”

The Reason Behind Student Protest

The SC/ST law hostel’s B.Ed and law students have been protesting since August 1 and requesting government action due to the purportedly inadequate facilities and poor food served there.

If the district administration did not comply with the angry students’ requests. As a result, protests would become more violent. Under the condition of anonymity, a law student who spoke to Republic stated, “The warden has made our lives difficult by establishing rules and a curfew that cannot be obeyed because we are law students and sometimes cases that we have taken up on a test basis would have a follow-up at strange hours. Second, the food provided for the past year is of poor quality. We can see worms in the decaying veggies in the sambar. This prevents us from eating it, and despite our repeated requests to the warden, he doesn’t seem to pay attention to us. We appreciate the MLA’s intervention and his assurance that the warden will face the consequences.”

The saffron party jumped to the defense of the students. They stated that it was improper for the MLA’s party to incite them against the warden. Furthermore, it was the duty of the concerned authorities to consider the demands. In an interview with Republic, BJP MLC Tejasvini said, “MLA is a responsible guy, and we applaud him for taking a stand, but encouraging students to lock the warden up and beat him up, give rotten food is not acceptable. Moreover, He needs to be careful what he says.
