At a function held at the school to honour Ponmani Devi on Saturday, she handed over the documents to Minister for School Education K.A. Sengottaiyan.  The function also had the presence of MLAs K.S. Thennarasu and K.V. Ramalingam.

More About Her

She started her career as a government school teacher in Erode district in 1964. After teaching for 32 years, in 1996 she retired as the headmistress of a government high school in Gobichettipalayam taluk.

This isn’t her first act of generosity.  She donated land 25 for the construction of a hostel for boys and girls by the backward classes welfare department. Nine years later, in 2015, she donated Rs. 2 lakhs to the government when the education department took steps to upgrade the Chithode government girls high school as a higher secondary school.

But the school which started class 11 did not have space for class 12. When Ponmani Devi got to know about this, she decided to donate land to the school to construct additional buildings for class 12. District collector Mr. Prabhakar received the documents of the land from her.  He has asked the educational department officials to take steps for constructing new buildings for class 12 students to study in. The educational department officials told that they would start class 12 classes from this academic year after completing the construction of the buildings.

On asking about her acts of charity for public good, Ponmani quoted, “I want to do good as long as I live.” It is really remarkable to see people like her who do good for the society. Even age cannot deter their spirits.

While people like Ponmani Devi donated land for a Girls school, a person from U.P. killed his one month old daughter for a shocking reason. Check out the article to know the reason.
