12 Times Odisha Sets Example For The Other Indian States Through Various Initiatives

Odisha is known for natural disasters like floods and cyclones. But now it is the model state for all the states in India. It has developed much to fade its fame of the poorest state of India earlier. It is setting examples for the rest of the states in India.

The initiatives and success stories that make states proud are listed here.


1. Tsunami Ready Villages


Coastal villages of Odisha are highly prone to extreme weather conditions. Among all those, the two villages named Noliasahi and Venkatriapur have been declared “Tsunami Ready” villages. It was recognized by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO for the preparedness of these two villages against tsunamis. And also these are the two villages that were hit worst by the 1999 super cyclone.


2. Anand Ghar – Let’s Read Initiative


To make a police station more policing and child-friendly, the Anand Ghar is designed. It is designed like a children’s room which consists of reading and activity rooms, computer systems, books, magazines, and other reading materials. To encourage the children in reading, all Anand Ghar centers will have a library with a collection of fiction, non-fiction, bestsellers, and encyclopedias.

It will have all kid-friendly materials like cards and board games, coloring, and sketchbooks. Odisha becomes the first state in India to launch this ‘Let’s Read’ initiative to create a friendly relationship between the public and police.


3. Safe Drinking Water In Puri

Puri is the first city in India to have drinking tap water facilities. It is accessible in all parts of the city. Through this, Puri is added to the list of cities in the developed nations like the USA, Japan, England, Singapore that supplies quality drinking tap water.


4. ISO Certification For Hostels


To improve the facilities of SC and ST hostels, the SC & ST welfare department had launched the “Mission Suvidya” project to provide uniform standards of infrastructure, amenities, and human resources. In the first phase of this project, 44 hostels from Keonjhar and Sambalpur districts were awarded ISO certification. Thus the Odisha had become the first state in the country to receive ISO certification for hostels meant for tribal students.


5. Mo School


Mo School is the program launched by the Odisha government to transform the educational infrastructure across the state. The three senior IAS officers also joined the Mo School campaign and adopted three schools for development.


6. Announcement Of Smart Health Cards


Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik announced the Smart Health Card through which the people can get free and quality healthcare services in about 200 hospital chains all over the country. This Smart Health Card system will be going to benefit 3.5 crore people in Odisha. Sukri Dhanga Majhi from Bonda is the first person who received this smart health card from the CM of Odisha.


7. Sponsored The Indian National Hockey Teams

Indian National Hockey teams of both men and women were receiving sponsors from the Odisha government from the year 2018. The contract was signed for 5 years which will be going to end in 2023. This proud state had shown its interest to sponsor the teams for the next 10 years.


8. First Dedicated Hospital For COVID-19 Patients

The largest hospital in Bhubaneshwar is the first hospital dedicated to the treatment of COVID-19 patients when the pandemic struck. The hospital is equipped with 500 beds including 42 critical beds.


9. Presented A Climate Budget In 2020

A coastal state Odisha is a disaster-prone region and faces drastic climatic change-induced events such as floods, tropical cyclones, and water stresses every year. To overcome this, the Odisha government presented a Climate Budget in 2020. Odisha became the first state to present a climate budget in 2020.


10. Bhubaneswar – First Indian City To Vaccinate 100% Population Against COVID-19

Bhubaneswar Vaccination

Bhubaneshwar was named the first city in India to have vaccinated 100% of its population against covid-19. The state recently has reached the two-crore landmark in the number of vaccinations.


11. Mission Shakti


Odisha set an example for the entire country in empowering women and children. The Odisha government had launched the Mission Shakti program through which more than 70 lakh women are benefitted both financially and socially.


12. Medical Practitioners


IAS and IPS officers from Odisha, who are also doctors, wore the coat of medical practitioners to ease the situation during the COVID pandemic.
