India’s tech industry is experiencing major development that will secure its position in the future. Under the National Critical Minerals Mission, the Indian government is executing a strategic venture dedicated to safeguarding essential minerals for semiconductor manufacturing and advanced technological production. Such minerals are necessary to build key electronic components that sustain artificial intelligence applications, telecommunications systems, and other innovative industries.

The Indian government has allocated $4 billion (equivalent to Rs 34,300 crore) to finance this mission over six years. The investment is designed to increase homegrown resource manufacturing and create an enduring supply of essential materials. India’s growing interest in artificial intelligence, combined with semiconductor production and technological advancement, is being supported through enhanced supply chains of essential minerals.

Prime Minister Modi leads the Union Cabinet, which approved the National Critical Minerals Mission (NCMM) through the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The mission will receive Rs 16,300 crore in government funding, followed by an estimated Rs 18,000 crore investment from Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and supporting organizations. As part of this mission, India aims to secure essential mineral resources because they are key materials for producing semiconductors and developing AI technology. By establishing a sustainable mineral supply chain, India intends to minimize technological imports and enhance its role in global technological competition.

National Critical Minerals Mission

The Indian government has made various efforts through the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, recognizing the important role that critical minerals play in various high-tech, clean energy, and defense industries. Over the past two years, it has been working to address issues in this sector. These initiatives aim to reduce dependence on foreign sources for essential minerals and ensure a steady, self-reliant supply. India is focusing on strengthening the domestic supply chain and promoting sustainable extraction practices to keep pace with the growing needs of the technology and defense sectors, setting a global trend toward clean energy.

The Union Cabinet has approved the National Critical Minerals Mission to cover the entire value chain, from exploration and mining of minerals to beneficiation, processing, and recovery of minerals from end-of-life products. This comprehensive approach aims to bolster the domestic supply of critical minerals that India needs to be self-sufficient in. The mission will also identify and conduct intensive exploration of domestic and offshore minerals, enabling India to meet the country’s rising needs for high-tech industries, clean energy, and defense.
