The world of football is in shock. What began as just another day ended in an unimaginable tragedy as news broke that Liverpool star Diogo Jota had died in a devastating car crash. A player known not just for his lightning-fast feet on the field but also for his quiet strength off it, Jota’s sudden passing has left fans, teammates, and the entire sporting community heartbroken. As tributes pour in from across the globe, one question hangs heavy in the air: How did this happen? Here’s everything we know so far about the tragic accident that took one of football’s brightest lights far too soon.
Diogo Jota Dies In A Car Crash

He was driving a Lamborghini when the vehicle reportedly sustained a blown tyre while he was overtaking on the A-52 at Cernadilla in the province of Zamora, near the Portuguese border.
Diogo Jota and his younger brother, André Silva, were operating a Lamborghini on Spain’s A-52 close to Cernadilla in the province of Zamora just after midnight on July 3, 2025. The Spanish Civil Guard reports that one of the car’s rear tires unexpectedly blew out as it passed another vehicle. The Lamborghini went off the road, crashed, and caught fire as a result. The car fire spread to surrounding vegetation, attracting emergency personnel, and both brothers unfortunately died at the scene.
The incident took place close to the town of Cernadilla in Zamora, northwest Spain, at approximately 12:30 a.m. local time. André Silva, a 26-year-old professional footballer, Jota’s brother, who was also a professional soccer player, also died in the accident.

Less than two weeks after his wedding, Liverpool Football Club star Diogo Jota passed away in a car accident, leaving the team “devastated.”
“The club has been notified that the 28-year-old and his brother, Andre, died in a car accident in Spain.”
“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and requests that the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates, and club staff be respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.”

“We have lost two champions. The passing of Diogo and André Silva represents an irreparable loss for Portuguese football, and we will do everything we can to honour their legacy every day.”
The death of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva this morning in Spain has saddened the Portuguese football federation and the entire Portuguese football community, Pedro Proença, the president of the Portuguese FA, wrote on social media. In addition to being an outstanding footballer who appeared in nearly 50 games for the national A team, Diogo Jota was also a remarkable individual who was admired by both his opponents and teammates, had a charming smile, and was well-known in the community.

Diogo Jota’s death “does not make sense,” according to soccer great Cristiano Ronaldo, who also expressed his sympathies to Jota’s family.
“You had recently gotten married, and we had just joined the national team together.” In a statement on X, the Portuguese forward wrote, “I send my condolences and all the strength in the world to your family, to your wife, and to your children.”
Since Jota’s 2019 international debut for the Selecao, Ronaldo and Jota have played together for the national team.
“Devastating news about Diogo Jota & his brother Andre this morning,” remarked Jamie Carragher, a former defender for Liverpool. “We are thinking about his wife Rute and their three beautiful children, as well as all of their family and friends.”
The world of football has lost not just a talented player but a beloved teammate. As we mourn this unimaginable loss, we also honour their spirit, their love for the game, and the legacy they leave behind. For Diogo, it wasn’t just about goals scored — it was about the passion he brought, the humility he carried, and the people he inspired.
May they both rest in peace.
