In the parking area of a Michaels craft store in Petaluma, California, about 40 miles north of San Francisco, in December 2020, Katie made up a tale about a Latino pair and claimed that they were attempting to kidnap her kids.

She documented the accusation on camera and posted it to Instagram. When Petaluma police looked into the strange occurrence, they didn’t find any eyewitnesses or criminal proof to support Katie’s account. Katie Sorensen was accused of filing a fraudulent report concerning an alleged kidnapping attempt in April 2021.

Local Petaluma media outlets characterized the couple as being of Latino descent, Eddie and Sadie Martinez. The authorities acquitted them of all charges.

On Thursday, April 27, the office of the district attorney stated that the court had found Katie’s report to the police to be untrue and that the charged couple had categorically rejected it. In addition, investigators’ acquisition of a store videotape also refuted her allegations.

In the since-deleted Instagram video, Katie said that the Latino pair trailed her inside the Michaels store and trailed her as she strolled through the shop with her two kids in a stroller. She also alleged that the pair had made remarks regarding how they looked at her kids.

The woman and the man, Katie continued, got her the “heebie-jeebies” and didn’t seem like “clean-cut people.” She claimed that her paralysis from dread prevented her from speaking to them.

Katie Sorensen also said in the footage that the pair trailed her through the store to the parking area and hung around her pram as she put her kids in the car. She asserted that the couple drove off after she called for assistance. Katie shared two videos on Instagram detailing her accusations, and each video received over 4.5 million views.

Katie reported the alleged abduction to the Petaluma police after the event. However, due to discrepancies between the details given in the Instagram video and her account with the officers, investigators determined that the report involved suspicious circumstances.

When Katie made her charges in December 2020, Petaluma police declared that they had not discovered any proof of an offense and concluded the case.

Eddie and Sadie Martinez also refuted Katie’s claims, telling the Petaluma Argus-Courier that they were there to purchase festive decorations and that they thought the influencer was motivated by racism in making the untrue allegations.

April 2021 saw the detention of Katie Sorensen. But her trial finally got underway on April 18, 2023, following multiple postponements. She was charged with three misdemeanor offenses for allegedly supplying false information to police and a detective on three separate occasions.

According to the prosecution, the 31-year-old parent influencer made the attempted kidnapping accusations in her videos in an effort to make money and build her Instagram brand at the time.

Charles Dresow allegedly said during the April 2023 hearing that Katie misinterpreted what transpired in the Michaels’ parking lot because she was anxious due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

What Is The Jury’s Decision?

The jury found Katie Sorensen not guilty on the initial two counts. However, she was deemed culpable of the third count, which was connected to a police interview on December 14. She was arrested without delay.

According to officials, she is confined in the Sonoma County jail. When Katie gets the verdict in June, she could spend up to six months in jail.
