Indians Who Won The World’s Most Popular Film Award Oscar

Oscar Awards are considered as the world’s most popular film awards in the “Field of cinema”. So far no Indian film has won under the Best Foreign Film category. However, there have been technical categories where Indian artists have left behind their international counterparts.

Here is the complete list of all the Indians who have won Oscar that honors the best talent in films, be it Hollywood or International cinema.

 

1. Bhanu Athaiya: Best Costume Design

Bhanu Athaiya is the first Indian who won Oscar Award for Best Costume Design for her work in the film Ben Kingsley starred Gandhi (1982) along with John Mollo. She had designed costumes for Bollywood hits like Pyaasa, Chaudhvin Ka Chand, CID, Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam, Guide and many others.  She has worked with many big names like Guru Dutt, Yash Chopra, Ashutosh Gowarikar and Raj Kapoor.

 

2. Satyajit Ray: Honorary Award

Considered as one of the greatest directors in Indian (especially Bengali) cinema, the maverick filmmaker Satyajit Ray first film Pather Panchali won many national and international awards. In the year 1992, he was awarded Honorary Award at the 64th Academy Awards. Due to his illness, he could not attend the ceremony to accept the award and was in the hospital during that time. However, via live video feed from the hospital bed, he gave his acceptance speech.

 

3. Resul Pookutty: Best Sound Mixing

Resul Pookutty who has worked in the field of sound designing, sound editing, and mixing became the third Indian to receive Oscar at the 81st Academy Awards for Best Sound Mixing in Slumdog Millionaire. He won the award along with Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke.

Pookutty, while dedicating the trophy to a billion Indians, then said, “I dedicate this award to my country. This is not just a sound award but a piece of history that has been handed over to me.”

4. A.R.Rahman: Best Original Score

AR Rahman has made an international recognition for his music and talent. Rahman is the first Indian music director to win two Oscars for the Best Original Score for Slumdog Millionaire and its foot-tapping song “Jai Ho”.

The musician in his acceptance speech said, “Before coming here I was excited and terrified. The last time I felt that way was when I was getting married. There is a Hindi dialogue ‘mere pass ma hai’ which means even if I have got nothing I have my mother here. I want to thank her for coming all the way to support me.”

5.  AR Rahman and Gulzar: Best Original Song

Gulzar and AR Rahman won an Oscar for Best Original Song for ‘Jai Ho’ at the 81st Academy Awards. Gulzar who wrote the lyrics proved his mettle as the song went on to become a sensation even in Hollywood. Unfortunately, he could not attend the awards function.

Media highly influences people. And some people give more importance to reel actors and actress and make them highlight.
