The events that ensued culminated in the epic Battle of Panipat in 1761. The death of Malhar Rao Holkar, the ruler of Indore, in 1765 added to the turmoil. Following that, Khanderao’s son gained the crown but died in 1767, leaving Ahilyabai as regent of Indore for a brief period.

In 1767, Ahilyabai Holkar became the queen of Indore, assuming complete control and becoming the reigning ruler.
