It is sad to see that the birds are becoming homeless today because of deforestation, fewer trees, and climatic changes. Sometimes the natural disaster like tsunami and floods would also cause the shift of the habitat of birds. Happily, the terrace of some good-hearted person’s house has become the habitat of birds like parrots. The Birdman of Chennai Joseph Sekar and the couple Sudarshan and Vidya feed parrots every day. They not only provide food but also shows more care and love towards parrots.

The Joseph Sekar called “Birdman of Chennai” lives in Royapettah, Chennai. He is an electrician and camera mechanic by profession. Joseph feeds more than 3000 parrots every day. He spends 40% of his salary feeding the terrace guest. Joseph told in many interviews that he started this journey of service in December 2004, which is eventually called as tsunami period. He started feeding around five parrots with soaked rice and water when the birds were sitting in the corner searching for food. Now the number of terrace guests is increased to more than 3000. He feeds them twice, morning and evening. Along with parrots, other birds are also coming, but the number is few.

Sudarshan Shah lives in Chintadripet served as a dining area for more than 1000 parakeets. Like Sekar, a Birdman of Chennai, Sudarshan and his wife Vidhya feeding parakeets on their terrace for more than 10 years.

He talks about the feeding and its beginning of this service. Sudarshan stated that few parrots came over his terrace ten years ago and looked for food in many interviews. He also feeds them with rice. From the next day, parakeets continued their timings, and the number of parakeets also increased. The terrace guest number is now reached more than 1000. Sudarshan also told about the process he is following in the day start and the evening. He daily wakes up at 4.30 AM and cleans the dining area. Joseph feeds the soaked rice by placing it on the terrace. Sudarshan also provides parrots groundnut along with rice. He also said that the recent lockdown periods are a tough time for them to feed parakeets. It shows that how the couple is being so careful and loves birds.

The Incident That Made Him Feed

When Sudarshan was asked about what made him take up this work in the interview, Sudarshan said that the house he grew up in had sparrow nests.

“We grew up with these small human-friendly birds. When I was grown up, the house was modified, which drove the sparrows away. However, after the changes, I began feeding a small number of parrots on my terrace which has now become routine for me.”

The Birdman of Chennai and the couple in Chintadripet are beautiful examples to show love for birds. Deforestation, population growth, and other climatic changes are the reasons for birds losing their habitat. They are struggling for survival, and even some families of birds are disappearing now. Only a few people can be seen, like Sudarshan and Joseph, who care for birds as their pets and more than their family members. Save the birds.
