Shri Hemkund Sahib Halt

Hemkund Sahib, also known as Gurudwara Sri Hemkund Sahib Ji, is a prominent Sikh pilgrimage place in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district. It is located in the Himalayas at an elevation of roughly 4,633 metres (15,200 feet) above sea level. The name “Hemkund Sahib” means “lake of ice” and refers to the pristine glacier lake near the Gurudwara.

Every year, thousands of Sikh worshippers travel to Hemkund Sahib, embarking on a difficult trek to reach the sacred spot. Pilgrims will have a tremendous spiritual and environmental experience as they hike over harsh mountain terrain and across lovely valleys. To meet the needs of guests, the Gurudwara provides lodging and langar (community kitchen) facilities.

However, due to unfavorable weather circumstances, the pilgrimage to Shri Hemkund Sahib in Uttarakhand was temporarily halted on May 26 for two days. Concerns that heavy rain and snowfall posed threats along the pilgrimage path prompted the decision to cancel the trek. The pilgrimage was permitted to restart on May 28 due to improved weather conditions, allowing pilgrims to continue their journey.

In reaction to the significant snowfall at Hemkund Sahib earlier this month, officials imposed a travel ban aimed primarily at young children and seniors aged 60 and above.

Moreover, this preventive action was implemented to guarantee pilgrims’ safety and well-being in the face of adverse weather conditions.
