The season of IPL 13 has started in UAE. In the recent match between Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunil Gavaskar has passed a derogatory remark on Virat Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma. Royal Challengers Bangalore lost the match by a whopping 97 runs margin. Virat Kohli had a bad day in the field. He dropped two simple catches of KXIP captain KL Rahul. KL Rahul went on to score 132 not out. Virat Kohli did not perform well with the bat either. He got out at a score of 1 in 5 balls. Sunil Gavaskar who was in the commentary box passed an unsavory comment against Virat Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma.
Sunil Gavaskar said in the commentary, “Inhone lockdown me to bas Anushka ki gendon ki practice ki hai. (he has only faced Anushka’s bowling in lockdown)“. Actually, Sunil Gavaskar was referring to the video of Virat Kohli has shared in his social media in the month of May during coronavirus lockdown. In the video, Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma were seen playing cricket on the terrace.
But the comment of Sunil Gavaskar caused a massive uproar on social media. Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma, wife of Virat Kohli lashes out on a legendary cricketer. She referred the comment as distasteful. Anushka Sharma called for some respect for herself and the couple. Anushka Sharma took to her Instagram story and wrote,
“That, Mr Gavaskar, your message is distasteful is a fact but I would love for you to explain why you thought of making such a sweeping statement on a wife accusing her for her husband’s game?”
“I am sure over the years you have respected the private lives of every cricketer while commentating on the game. Don’t you think you should have equal amount of respect for me and us? I am sure you can have many other words and sentences in your mind to use to comment on my husband’s performance from last night or are your words only relevant if you use my name in the process?”
“It’s 2020 and things still don’t change for me. When will I stop getting dragged into cricket and stop being used to pass sweeping statements? Respected Mr Gavaskar, you are a legend whose names stands tall in this gentleman’s game. Just wanted to tell you what I felt when I heard you say this,”
It is not the first time Anushka Sharma has been blamed for Virat Kohli’s poor performance. It happened before during the World Cup. This is not right for blaming the wife for the husband’s performance. But, the remark of Sunil Gavaskar has been misunderstood as he was referring to the video and it was not in the sense in which people have taken.
