Cancer treatment can put a heavy financial burden on patients and their families. The cost of medicines is a major part of that expense, especially for those who require treatment over an extended period. Now, the government has announced revised prices for 543 brands of anti-cancer medicines, bringing relief to patients purchasing several commonly used cancer drugs.

The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has released a revised list of Maximum Retail Prices (MRPs). The new rates will come into effect on November 9, 2026. Some medicines have seen substantial price reductions, although the actual savings will depend on the prescribed drug, brand, strength and pack size.

Several anti-cancer medicines have recorded significant reductions in their listed prices. These include treatments used for different types of cancer. Anarzole, a brand of anastrozole marketed by RPG Life Sciences, has seen one of the sharpest reductions. The price of a pack containing 10 tablets of 1 mg each has fallen from Rs 695.76 to Rs 73.

Azacytin, a 100 mg azacitidine injection marketed by Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, has been reduced from Rs 6,337 to Rs 1,495.04. Meanwhile, the price of Abbott Healthcare’s Bevacizab 100 mg/4 ml injection has dropped from Rs 21,767.70 to Rs 5,930.13 per 4 ml vial. Other medicines have also become considerably cheaper. The price of Dasanat 20, a dasatinib brand, has been revised from Rs 2,812.50 to Rs 1,085.93 for a pack of 60 tablets. Debrumab 60 mg, a denosumab injection, has seen its price fall from Rs 22,031.25 to Rs 5,941 per pre-filled syringe.

Enuta, an enzalutamide brand marketed by RPG Life Sciences, has been reduced from Rs 6,578.20 to Rs 2,232 for a pack of 28 capsules. The price of ERLIB, a brand of erlotinib, has fallen from Rs 4,637.45 to Rs 2,008 for a bottle containing 30 tablets. Fulbreca, a fulvestrant injection, has also become cheaper. Its price has been revised from Rs 26,072.16 to Rs 5,491 per 5 ml vial.

These examples highlight the scale of the reductions. However, patients should check the revised MRP for their specific medicine before calculating their expected savings.

Why Has The Government Reduced Cancer Drug Prices?

The latest revision follows the government’s decision to introduce Trade Margin Rationalisation (TMR) for 137 identified non-scheduled anti-cancer drugs. Under this measure, the NPPA has capped trade margins at 30% of the Maximum Retail Price for the identified medicines. The authority has invoked provisions of the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013, to implement the policy.

Trade margins are the amounts added at different stages of the medicine distribution and sales chain. By restricting these margins, the government aims to bring down prices for patients while maintaining the availability of medicines. The identified list covers several important treatments. These include immunotherapy medicines used for more than 20 types of cancer, denosumab for certain breast and prostate cancer patients, and pegfilgrastim, which helps prevent a drop in infection-fighting white blood cells during cancer treatment.

Bevacizumab, which is used to treat certain colorectal, ovarian and cervical cancers, is also among the medicines covered by the policy. The broader objective is to curb excessive trade margins, improve access to treatment and reduce the financial pressure on patients and their families.

The revised MRPs will come into effect on November 9, 2026. The latest price list is based on information submitted by pharmaceutical companies up to October 27. The NPPA has said that the list will continue to be updated as manufacturers submit revised prices for the identified non-scheduled anti-cancer medicines.

Patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals can consult the NPPA’s official website for the latest prices and the complete list of affected brands. It is important to remember that the reduction will not be the same for every medicine. Prices may differ according to the brand, dosage, strength and pack size. Patients should confirm the revised price of the exact formulation prescribed to them.

Conclusion

The revised prices for 543 anti-cancer drug brands mark an important step towards making several cancer medicines more affordable. With the new rates taking effect on November 9, patients may see meaningful savings on selected treatments. The actual benefit, however, will depend on the medicine they use. Checking the updated MRP and discussing treatment costs with a healthcare professional can help patients and families understand how the changes affect their expenses.
