The proposed expressway is expected to start from Pune Bypass Road at Kesnand (Wagholi) and Lonikand. The state government has sanctioned upgrading the 53-kilometer route from Pune to Shirur in six phases. The proposed expressway will start from Pune Bypass at Kesnand and Lonikand, head to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar via crossing, and link to Balasaheb Thackeray Samruddhi Expressway.

MSIDC Overview

The Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) will be carrying out this project. The Government of Maharashtra has undertaken it. It is established with the support of the state Public Works Department (PWD). The project is created to develop physical infrastructure. PWD said in an official note,

“As per the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed in March 2024, the PWD and Maharashtra government will initiate all necessary measures to ensure the commencement of the project within two years, failing which the Ministry of road transport and highways (MORTH) may consider taking over the entire project in public interest.”

The cabinet decided in a meeting on Thursday to improve the national highway from Ahmednagar to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

This project, which is executed by the MSIDC, is expected to cost Rs 7,515 crore for the Pune-Shirur Road. An additional Rs 2,050 crore is allotted for upgrading the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Road via the Ahmednagar Bypass. The total cost of the highway is approximately Rs 9,565 crore.

After the PWD finishes toll collection on the Shirur to Ahmednagar route, it will transfer control to the MSIDC. Similarly, once toll collection ends on the Devgad to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar route, it will also be handed over to the MSIDC for improvements.

The elevated road will improve regional connectivity and reduce traffic in particular areas. This indeed will help reduce congestion at places like Yerawada, Kharadi, Wagholi, Lonikand, Shikrapur, and Shirur, reducing travel time between Wagholi and Pune.
