After Virat Kohli Stepped Down, Sunil Gavaskar Picks Rishabh Pant As The Next Indian Test Captain

Virat Kohli stepped down as a Test captain after a series loss against South Africa. He already left T20I captaincy after T20I World Cup. Virat Kohli has led the Indian Test cricket team first in 2014 against Australia. KL Rahul led the team in the second Test match after Virat Kohli was injured. Rohit Sharma has been made vice-captain for Tests, but his injury made him opt-out from the Test series. Rohit Sharma has already been captain of white-ball cricket. Now after Virat Kohli, the question is Who will be Virat Kohli’s successor? There are names like Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Ajinkya Rahane, and Jasprit Bumrah. A legendary cricketer, a little master Sunil Gavaskar has picked southpaw wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant as the next Indian captain.

Rishabh Pant is the only Asian wicketkeeper who scored centuries in England, Australia, India, and South Africa. Sunil Gavaskar picks Rishabh Pant as Virat Kohli’s successor as the next India Test captain. A little master believes a sense of responsibility will make him a better cricketer in all forms of the game. Talking to India Today, Sunil Gavaskar told,

“It’s going to be quite a debate as far as the selection committee is concerned as to who should be taking Indian cricket forward. First of all, it should be someone who is an automatic pick across all formats of the game. Once that happens, it will be a lot easier.”

He added,

“If you ask me, I am still saying, I would look at Rishabh Pant as next India captain.”

“For one reason only, just like Rohit Sharma was given the captaincy of Mumbai Indians when Ricky Ponting stepped down, look at the change in his batting after that. Suddenly the responsibility of being captain made him convert those beautiful cameos of the 30s, 40s, and 50s into hundreds, 150s, and 200s.”

“I think that sense of responsibility given to Rishabh Pant will help him score many more of that wonderful hundred he scored at Newlands.”

Sunil Gavaskar explained the reason behind his pick of Rishabh Pant. He also gave the example of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, who achieved great success after taking over the captaincy at a very young age. He added,

“Yes, I am saying that. Tiger Pataudi was captain at the age of 21 under adverse circumstances when Nari Contractor was injured. Look what he did after that. He took to captaincy like duck to water.”

“I think what we have seen with Rishabh Pant as the captain of Delhi Capitals in the IPL, I do believe he has the capability of taking Indian cricket forward and making it a very exciting team to watch.”

Rohit Sharma, who was chosen as a deputy to Virat Kohli in Test, and a captain in white-ball cricket will most probably take over as a captain of all three formats. What do you guys think about Sunil Gavaskar’s claim of making Rishabh Pant as captain? Let us know in the comments below.
