Love, talent, and music does not know any geographical boundaries. These things overcome the barriers of language. The internet has played an essential role in making it easier. With Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, every new day, we experience new songs. The latest on the list is Sinhala Song ‘Manike Mage Hithe.’ Manike Mage Hithe has blown the internet, with many celebrities and commoners are making Reels and grooving to its soothing tune. The song is sung by Yohani De Silva along with rapper Satheeshan and produced by Sri Lankan composer Chamath Sangeeth. There is also a rap by Satheeshan Rathnayaka. From many regional language covers to dance videos, the Sri Lankan song is ruling the internet.

Talking about it to Indian Express, Yohani Diloka De Silva said,

“I am a huge fan of Chamath Sangeeth. So, when I saw the song, I did a TikTok version after which Chamath asked if we could do a full version.”

Recorded At Her Home

Yohani added that the idea and the conversation for this song came in the lockdown. That is the reason she could not record the song in a professional studio. The next best option she found was a corner in her home. The video was shot in Chamath’s studio in Colombo. She is overwhelmed and touched by how a song in Sinhala from Sri Lanka, ‘a tiny country’, is suddenly the rage. Yohani De Silva said,

“A lot of our music is inspired by Bollywood, probably because we are neighbours. The influence is really strong. But I’m seeing a renewed interest in Sri Lankan music and most importantly in our language… For me, this kind of love is also representative of a bond between India and Sri Lanka.”

Music As Career

Yohani De Silva began her career by doing covers of Sinhala songs and Bollywood songs dubbed in Sinhala. She collaborated with her friends for music videos and also made some originals. In 2019, she returned from Australia and took music as her profession. Yohani said,

“My influences are probably why I haven’t stuck to a genre. I like to experiment with my music and explore everything that I can. I rap, I sing, I play the guitar.”
