Launched in October 2023 by Schmidt, Rakesh Gaonkar, and Shivam Chauhan, Sarla Aviation is developing its prototype named ‘Shunya.’ In terms of capacity, Shunya is capable of carrying up to six passengers with a maximum load of 680kg, designed for travel at a maximum speed of 250km/h. The vehicle is ideal for short journeys, such as 20-30 km, to minimize travel time in traffic-congested areas while making transportation more environmentally friendly. Schmidt noted,

“It will be optimized for short trips of 20-30 km aimed at reducing travel times across congested urban areas in a sustainable and efficient manner. India is a price-sensitive market, and therefore, our aim is to develop a cost-effective solution and make urban air mobility accessible to a wider set of consumers.”

In an effort to enhance its capacity to deliver excellent services, Sarla Aviation has signed an MoU with precision-manufacturing company Sona SPEED. Supplier collaboration will concentrate on Stylekits and structural subsystems for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, thus constituting the latest development in the start-up’s evolution towards transforming urban air mobility.
