There has been speculation that Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan has made a clever reference to Sameer Wankhede and the drug case in his directorial debut The Ba***ds of Bollywood. Sameer has now filed an action for defamation against Aryan and his celebrity father.
Sameer Wankhede Sues Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies
On Thursday, Sameer filed a defamation complaint in the Delhi High Court, demanding a “permanent and mandatory injunction, declaration, and damages against Red Chillies Entertainment Pvt. Ltd, owned by Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan, along with Netflix.”
Sameer filed an action for defamation over an allegedly defamatory representation of him in a Netflix series and is requesting a prohibition on the show.
In his plea, Sameer claims that one sequence in the show ‘mocks’ him and that it “contains false, malicious, and defamatory content aimed at damaging his reputation.” According to the lawsuit, the series portrays “anti-drug enforcement agencies” negatively and has the potential to damage public trust in law enforcement institutions.
Wankhede has claimed Rs 2 crore in damages from Shah Rukh Khan and Red Chillies Entertainment, his firm, and the producer of The Ba***ds of Bollywood, claiming that he will donate the money to the Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital for cancer treatment.
Sameer Wankhede’s Statement
“Sameer Wankhede, IRS Officer, has filed a defamation suit before the Delhi High Court seeking relief in the nature of a permanent and mandatory injunction, declaration, and damages against Red Chillies Entertainment Pvt. Ltd, owned by actor Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan, the OTT platform Netflix, and others, having been aggrieved by a false, malicious, and defamatory video produced by Red Chillies and broadcast by Netflix as part of their television series titled The Ba***ds of Bollywood.”
Wankhede Alleges Netflix Series Defames Him
“This series conveys a misleading and negative portrayal of anti-drug enforcement agencies, thereby eroding public confidence in law enforcement institutions,” he stated in his plea.
Wankhede further said that the series was purposefully designed to disparage his reputation and unfairly target him.
The complaint refers to a specific sequence in the show in which a character makes an obscene gesture after reciting Satyamev Jayate, and the suit claims that the act violates the provisions of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, which carries criminal penalties under the law.
Wankhede has also alleged that the series breaches multiple provisions of the Information Technology Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), claiming that it uses vulgar and objectionable content to stir public emotion.
The Case That Thrust Wankhede Into Headlines
On October 3, 2021, the Narcotics Control Bureau detained Aryan Khan, Ayaaz Merchant, and Munmun Dhamecha and accused them of possessing, using, and selling/purchasing prohibited narcotics. Their arrest occurred the day after the NCB stormed a cruise liner and claimed to have seized illegal substances. Twenty people were arrested in the case.
Sameer Wankhede, a former Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officer, headed the investigation and rose to prominence after arresting Aryan. Aryan Khan spent 25 days in jail before being granted bail.
