Political Career Of Smriti Irani: How A TV Actress Became A Political Giant Slayer

The 17th Lok Sabha Elections 2019 has brought a shock to many and also a lot of records have been broken. While most of us could foresee a win for BJP and NDA but only a few of us had imagined a total blowout of the other parties. Adding to the new records, finally, BJP has conquered Amethi which is best known as the hub of Congress. The former, HRD minister and TV actress Smriti Irani came out as a giant slayer after beating Rahul Gandhi to snatch the seat away from Congress. Most of us know about Irani’s TV career as she played one of the most iconic characters of Television, Tulsi from one of the longest running daily soaps from Indian television, Kyuki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Today we have brought you a highlight of her political career.

 

Early Days In Politics

Irani joined BJP back in 2003 and by the end of 2004, she became the vice president of the Maharashtra youth wing. She contested her first Lok Sabha elections in 2004 from the Chandani Chowk constituency. Her attempt failed to file success as opposition leader Kapil Sibal beat her.

 

The 2009 Lok Sabha Elections

Smriti did not contest in the 15th Lok Sabha election but she was campaigning for Vijay Goel. She raised the issues of women safety and capital punishment for the rapist. Later on, she became the National Secretary and the All India president of BJP Mahila Morcha. Irani was sworn as the Member of Parliament from Gujarat by the end of 2011.

 

16th Lok Sabha Elections

Smriti contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections against Rahul Gandhi from the Amethi constituency. Well, the Congress domination was once again visible in Amethi as a result of that, Rahul Gandhi won by a fine margin. However, that was an overall win for the BJP government. BJP named Irani as the minister of Human Resource Development but some controversies gained heat during that period. Apart from that, her ministry responses generated many other controversies Irani was then named as the Textile Minister.

Smriti once again contested from the Amethi constituency against the same opponent who had beaten him by over 1 lakh votes in the previous elections. We all knew the odds were not in her favor but the support of the people certainly was. Smriti was leading in most of the rounds of counting. The margin was more than 25000 which made Congress President Rahul Gandhi accept defeat before the total counting. All in all, she delivered the biggest shocks of this election by beating Rahul Gandhi by 55120 votes in the constituency where Congress was considered invincible.
