Experts say that one should keep track of their movement in terms of minutes and not kilometers. The person should decide the number of steps they need to walk based on their daily activity level. Defying the common perception of 10,000 steps a day, expert says one should find a sustainable way to work. You know your body the best, so understand your limitations and potential. Suddenly jumping into 10,000 steps daily can cause you more harm than good.

You should remember that steps happen even when not thinking of them. Like, taking the stairs, walking your dog, and walking instead of a drive are ways to increase your steps and move towards a fit body. It is even said that having any kind of movement is better than no movement at all. Furthermore, if you plan to walk for forty-five minutes, then it will be more fruitful than focusing on walking exactly five kilometers a day. The focus should simply be the time and not the distance.

A 2018 study published in the journal scientific reports debunks the popular idea of walking. Contrary to the popular notion of walking 10,000 steps daily, there’s no specific benchmark or an accurate indicator. As per a study conducted by Harvard, you only need to walk 4400 steps a day to lower your risk of death. Moreover, the risk is decreased with the increase in the number of steps but leveled around 7500 steps daily. Exercising for at least 20 minutes a day, along with the walk, should be the goal.
