Do you remember when you used to run home after school and watch your favorite music videos on MTV? Officially, those days are behind us. On October 12, 2025, Paramount Global made some not insignificant decisions – they will shut down the music channels of MTV before the end of the year 2025. Yeah, it’s actually happening.

Which MTV Channels Are Being Scrapped?

Five music channels are being closed down, including MTV 80s, MTV Music, Club MTV, MTV 90s, and MTV Live. Such channels will cease to air all over the world by December 31, 2025.

However, there is this one, but that does not mean MTV HD will not be there. It will continue running, though, so do not get excessively excited in case you are a music lover. The channel will also remain focused on the reality TV shows, which are nowadays the guilty pleasure of everyone anyway.

Why Is This Happening?

Let’s be real here. No one even watches music videos on television anymore. Why would they, when they have YouTube, TikTok, and Spotify? On your phone, you can access any song of your choice within a few seconds. This resulted in a huge decline in the viewership of MTV.

And there is the business aspect of it. Recently, Paramount Global merged with Skydance Media, and that was the catalyst for some severe cost-cutting, worth $500 million. It is business-wise to close down channels that are not generating revenue, as painful as it is to the heart.

When MTV Played Real Music

Millennials know what’s up. MTV used to be THE channel. You would get home after school or college and turn it on right away to get the new releases and pop music hits. It was not a mere background noise — it was an event.

The channel not only gave birth to careers but also turned music videos into an art form and, in general, made it cool. However, in the process, something went wrong. Reality shows began to replace them as they were more profitable to make. Programs such as Jersey Shore and Teen Mom started to attract audiences and revenues that the music videos could no longer equal.

What Does This Really Mean?

This isn’t just about MTV. It reflects the way that we now consume entertainment. The use of streaming and social media is killing traditional TV everywhere since these platforms are providing people with what they want, when they want it. Music videos on a programmed TV channel? Most people who are less than 30 consider that to be ancient history.

MTV ceased to be about music long ago. This is simply an announcement that makes it official. The reality programming will keep the brand alive; however, its existence as a music channel is virtually over.

The music channels of MTV are shutting down after 40 years. The channels will close globally by the end of December 31, 2025 — the official date marking the end of a period that defined youth culture for decades. MTV HD will continue with reality shows, but the days of music videos are past.

It’s sad, sure. But it’s also just reality. Times have changed, technology transformed everything, and MTV could not keep pace with platforms that allowed you to view anything you desired when you wished.
