A fight broke out late Sunday night in the boys’ hostel of the Government Medical College (GMC) over the film The Kerala Story. According to authorities, the situation began late at night when several students uploaded scenes from the infamous Hindi film “The Kerala Story” to a WhatsApp “study group” and said it was “worth watching.” However, others in the group expressed their disagreement.
The film ‘The Kerala Story’ has sparked a lot of interest across the country. Released on May 5, 2023, it is said to be based on a true story. The cast includes Adah Sharma, Sonia Balani, Yogita Bihani, and Siddhi Idnani. Sudipto Sen’s film has also sparked political debate. Social media users are divided based on their opinions of the film.
Details Of The Fight Among Medical Students
The WhatsApp chat swiftly escalated into a clash between two hostel groups formed consisting of students from different academic years. However, the two sides blamed one other for inciting the fight, which, according to the police, additionally included people from outside the hostels.
According to witnesses, the chaos went on all night, with even strangers getting involved. This was not, however, the first conflict between students living in hostels. They remembered an argument between the two groups a few months before.
As per some of the injured students, the college’s climate has become “highly polarised” in recent years. Students have formed religious and regional groups.
On the other hand, GMC Principal Dr. Shahi Sudhan Sharma denied that the campus was polarised. Furthermore, she added that the college has roughly 150 students from all across the country enrolled in PG and undergrad courses for the first time and that they all live in harmony.
Out of the five students, four were admitted to the hospital and were released the next morning. The fifth student, from Jammu division’s Bhaderwah region, remained in the hospital with more than a dozen stitches in his head. Nonetheless, his condition is stable, and he will be released soon.
Meanwhile, students who objected to the subject of The Kerala Story protested inside the GMC. They demanded that the opposing group be punished while brandishing signs that stated,
“We come to college to study, not fight.”
Government Response
Senior mainstream leaders in Kashmir reacted angrily to the student conflict. Mehbooba Mufti, who was the Chief Minister and PDP President, said, “Shocking that GOI promotes & encourages violence through films stoking communal fires.” Innocent people’s blood is being spilled to feed the BJP’s insatiable hunger for tiny electoral dividends.”
At the same time, the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association’s national convenor, Nasir Khuehami, indicated that the issue has been reviewed with the JK Lieutenant Governor’s office and ADGP Jammu Mukesh Singh to ensure that those responsible for the incident students are brought to justice. He advised students to maintain calm and order on campus.
