The 12th ICC Cricket World Cup started today with the inauguration match played between the home team England taking out Proteas South Africa. England started their World Cup campaign with a massive win of 104 Runs. England started off this World Cup with favorite tags because of their strong and aggressive batting approach and the home advantage. The toss of the first World Cup match was won by South African captain Faf Du Plessis and he chooses to bowl first.
2. Imran Tahir Took First Wicket
The first wicket of this World Cup was taken by leggie Imran Tahir. Faf Du Plessis started off with Imran Tahir, a leg – spinner. His decision to start with Imran Tahir was proved correct when Imran Tahir took the wicket of opener Johny Bairstow. Johny Bairstow has gone for the golden duck in the very first over of England innings.
3. Four Fifties In England Innings
After the early loss of Johny Bairstow, Jason Roy and Joe Root anchored the innings with a partnership of 106. Both of them got out in quick succession after scoring fifties. After Jason Roy and Joe Root got out, it was time for captain Eoin Morgan and all-rounder Ben Stokes to pace the innings. Eoin Morgan was in attacking mode and he hit two consecutive sixes on Lungi Ngidi.
The partnership between Eoin Morgan and Ben Stokes was 106 when again a man with the golden arm Imran Tahir strikes. He sent Eoin Morgan on 57 with an excellent catch at long on from Aiden Markram.
Ben Stokes holds one end till the 49th over and got out with 11 short of his hundred. He departed at 89. With four fifties, England finished off their innings at 311 for the loss of 8 wickets.
4. Jofra Archer Picks Up 3 Wickets
Virat Kohli said about Jofra Archer that he will be an X-factor and he is proving everyone right. Jofra Archer picked three wickets and dented the South African innings. Jofra finishes off with 3 for 27 in 7 overs.
5. South Africa Struggles
There was nothing gone in South Africa’s way apart from the toss. Earlier in the innings, Jofra Archer’s bouncer struck at Hashim Amla’s helmet which made him retired hurt. Later on, he came to bat but scored only 13 runs.
Only Quinton De Kock and Rassie van der Dussen scored the fifties. Rest of the batsman struggled against the short ball and South Africans were bowled out at 207.
6. Ben Stokes Player Of The Match
Ben Stokes for his all-round performance and probably one of the greatest catches in the World Cup history became the player of the match in Match 1. Check out the video below.
Ben Stokes scored 89 in 79 balls, took 2 wickets and 2 catches, one of them is a one hand stunner. England comfortably won the match by 104 runs.

England will play against Pakistan next at Nottingham on 3rd June, while South Africa will play against Bangladesh at The Oval on 2nd June.
