On March 3, 2025, Ranya Rao, the Kannada actress, was arrested at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru after allegedly trying to smuggle 14.8 kilograms of gold valued at more than Rs 12 crore from Dubai. Due to her four frequent Dubai flights within 15 days, the DRI initiated surveillance because they suspected criminal activities.

Gold bars were discovered by DRI officials during their search after she entered India through Emirates Airlines from Dubai. The officials found that it was concealed inside her jacket and other clothing. The court ordered an economic offenses court to present her in juvenile court before sentencing her to 14 days of judicial detention.
