Jemimah Rodrigues became a national hero after her incredible, undefeated 127* against Australia, which helped India achieve a world record chase in the Women’s World Cup semi-final. However, her life appeared to be totally different just a year ago. The young cricket player was enmeshed in an unexpected scandal.

Jemimah’s membership at Khar Gymkhana was suddenly terminated in 2024 on allegations that her father, Ivan Rodrigues, had held unapproved religious gatherings on the club’s property. A committee member claimed that Ivan utilized Jemimah’s membership to reserve the Presidential Hall at a discounted rate, and these reservations were allegedly used for religious gatherings, which is against the club’s bylaws.

Now, Jemimah Rodrigues has finally spoken about the incident. She revealed how deeply the situation affected her family.

In an interview, she said, “To tell the truth, sir, I do recall the time that occurred. Facing it head-on was one thing, but it stung a lot when my parents were brought into it for something we didn’t do. We have evidence that everything we did at the time complied with the laws and regulations. However, since my family and I had done nothing wrong, the accusations made against us truly hurt us.”

Jemimah Rodrigues continued, “That occurred immediately following our poor performance at the World Cup in Dubai. Personally, I was already depressed since I hadn’t lived up to my expectations. Then all of a sudden, I began to receive messages, news, and individuals saying awful things about me and even worse about my church and family. That devastated me. When my brother called, I remember crying uncontrollably. I had no idea what to do. False accusations about my family followed my performance, and it felt like one setback after another.”

“When all of this happened, I could handle the criticism directed at me, but when my parents were dragged into something we didn’t do, that really hurt,” she said. “We followed every rule, and we had proof. Yet people said terrible things about me, my family, and even my church. It broke me.”

Jemimah Rodrigues recalled that the controversy hit her at one of the lowest points in her career, immediately after a disappointing World Cup performance. “My brother called me and I just cried. First my form, then these false allegations… it felt like one blow after another,” she added.

In the midst of the commotion, her father explained that, contrary to what some accounts indicated, the sessions at the Gymkhana were merely prayer gatherings rather than conversion events.

In a statement from the previous year, Ivan clarified, “We booked the hall in accordance with the club’s procedures, with their full knowledge. These weren’t conversion meetings; they were open prayer gatherings. And because we respected the Gymkhana’s position, we instantly stopped when instructed to do so.”
