Once upon a time, there were kingdoms and palaces. People use to live in forts. Gone are those days as time passes. Now the forts have become a tourist attraction. The history of forts fascinates the tourists and gives us an excellent example of architecture. Now the cost of living is increasing day by day. Our lots of earnings we spent on paying the rents. But there is a fort in Rajasthan, where you will be surprised to know that the people have been living rent-free to date. There are thousands of people living inside the fort without paying anything. We are talking about the famous Jaisalmer Fort in Rajasthan, India’s only living fort.

Jaisalmer Fort was built by King Rawal Jaisal in 1156.  The fort is also a UNESCO heritage site and according to the reports, it is the only living fort in the world. While many other forts are converted into luxury hotels or even abandoned, but the Jaisalmer Fort is still standing tall with around 4000 progenies of the fort’s earliest inhabitants still living inside the fort. The main source of their earning is tourism.

During the early days, the kings of the fort were impressed with the services of their people and provided them a 1500 feet long fort to them. Due to this, even after more than 800 years after it was built, it is still inhabited by the descendent of those families who served the kings. Now they are reaping the benefits of their ancestor’s services. They are living in this amazing fort for free.

Inside the fort, thousands of visitors pass through the narrow lanes, the fort remains the society. This living fort has 99 bastions and is 250 feet tall. The walls of Jaisalmer fort are made from yellow sandstone bricks. The roofs are covered with 3 feet mud. It keeps the interior cool when the temperature rises.
