1. Hyderabad

The city was renamed from Bhagyanagar to Hyderabad. The state came into existence in 1948. Moreover, it was merged with Andhra States and renamed as Andhra Pradesh in 1956.

 

2. Uttar Pradesh

The state was renamed from the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh on January 25, 1950. Moreover, Rampur, Benares, and Tehri Garhwal are also being added.

 

3. Madhya Pradesh

The state was renamed from Madhya Bharat on November 1, 1959. However, the state came into existence on May 28, 1948.

 

4. Tamil Nadu

The state was renamed from Madras in August 1968. Under the States Recognition Act 1956. However, the Madras state was further divided into the states of Kerala, Mysore, and Madras.

 

5. Karnataka

The state was renamed from Mysore on November 1, 1973.

 

6. Uttarakhand

The state was renamed from Uttaranchal in 2006. The state was carved out of northern Uttar Pradesh and was known as Uttaranchal.

 

7. Odisha

The state was renamed from Orrisa in 2010.

Two more states have applied for the name change that is yet to be approved. They are

 

West Bengal

The state proposed to change its name from West Bengal to Paschim Bangla or Paschim Bango. In 2019, the Centre informed that the Rajya Sabha has not given its nod to change the name of West Bengal to ‘Bangla.’

 

Kerala

In August this year, the Kerala assembly passed a resolution urging to rename it as “Keralam.”
