Wettest – Mawsynram

Mawsynram in the Khasi Hills of Meghalaya holds the crown of being the wettest place of India and also of the world. It is located on the top of the hill in the middle of a valley. This place records 11,872 mm of rainfall during the peak monsoon season in the country. Landslides are a common event in the area. Due to the incessant heavy rains, the people here prepare themselves well in advance before the monsoon hits. The village also holds the Guinness World Record for receiving the highest rainfall in the world.

 

Driest – Leh

Leh is at an elevation of 11500 ft. The town of Leh is the driest spot in India. It is at an altitude of 3,524 meters. It receives an average of 102 mm of rainfall annually. Leh has a cold desert climate with a minimum temperature below freezing for most of the winters.

If you want to explore Leh, then visit from April to July in summer, July to September in monsoon, and October to March in winters.

 

Coldest – Dras

Dras is a quaint, scenic town that lies between the Zoji La Pass and Kargil town in Jammu and Kashmir. It is called the gateway of Ladakh and has been the coldest place in India for many decades. Dras is located at an elevation of 10,800 feet. The average temperature recorded in Dras is around -23 degrees Celsius, making it India’s coldest place. In January 1995, it broke all records when it recorded a temperature of -60 degrees Celsius as per the BRO signboard.

If you want to explore Dras, the summer season is best. From June to September, it is neither too hot nor too cold during this time. The weather is delightful and best for sightseeing.

 

Hottest – Phalodi, Rajasthan

Phalodi town is the buffer zone of the Thar Desert in Rajasthan. It is known as the hottest place in India. It holds the world record for the highest verified temperature in 2016 at 51 degrees Celsius. Phalodi is also called the Salt City as there are various salt industries are located. Despite the highest temperature, people are settled here, and visitors are also coming to explore the place.

 

Lowest – Kuttanad

It is hard to believe, but the Kuttanad region of Kerela has the lowest altitude in the whole of India. Farming is carried out 4-10 feet below sea level. It is also one of the places in India where farming is carried out at such a low altitude.

 

Highest – Kangchenjunga

It is located at an elevated temperature of 28,169 feet. Kangchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world and the highest in India. It is located at the Indo-Nepal border, and the remaining two in Nepal.
