Environmental activist Surendra Singh Choudhary, popularly known as Bittu Tabahi, has faced another setback in his efforts to keep the Ajnar River clean in Madhya Pradesh’s Rajgarh district. After spending months removing garbage from the river, he had placed dustbins along its banks to encourage people to dispose of their waste responsibly. However, one of the bins has now gone missing.

The 20-year-old activist shared a video on Instagram on Friday, showing the situation at the river and explaining what had happened. The incident comes days after he expressed disappointment over garbage returning to the waterway despite his extensive cleanup efforts.

Bittu Tabahi Says Dustbin Placed For Public Use Was Stolen

Bittu had placed two dustbins near the Ajnar River to make it easier for people to dispose of their waste instead of throwing it into the water or leaving it along the banks. However, when he returned to the spot, he found that one of the dustbins was missing. The activist expressed disappointment over the incident, explaining that the bins had been installed for public convenience rather than personal use.

The idea was straightforward: provide people with a place to throw away their rubbish and help prevent the river from becoming polluted again. Sharing the update on Instagram, Bittu said that even the drums placed for the convenience of the public had been stolen.

The incident has added another challenge to his efforts. While removing waste from a river requires considerable time and physical effort, maintaining the cleanliness of the surrounding area also depends on people using the facilities provided for them.

Ajnar River Continues To Face Garbage Problem

The missing dustbin is not the first setback Bittu has faced during his cleanup work. Earlier, he shared another video showing plastic bags and other waste accumulating along the Ajnar River in Rajgarh district.

Bittu had spent eight months removing tonnes of garbage from the river, often working without sophisticated equipment. Despite those efforts, waste began appearing again, leaving him disappointed. Instead of giving up, he returned to the river to remove the rubbish once more. According to the earlier account, he entered the water and pulled out the garbage bag by bag, despite not being a strong swimmer.

The repeated accumulation of waste highlights the difficulty of maintaining a clean river when people continue to dump rubbish in the surrounding area. Bittu’s efforts have focused not only on removing existing waste but also on encouraging people to change their disposal habits. Placing dustbins along the riverbank was one way to make responsible waste disposal easier.

However, the reported theft of one of the bins raises questions about how such facilities can be protected and maintained.

Social Media Users Express Support For Bittu Tabahi

Bittu’s latest update prompted reactions from social media users, with several expressing sympathy for the activist’s situation. One user commented, “I’ve started to feel really sorry for him at this point.”

A second user highlighted the need for people to change their behaviour, commenting, “People need to understand, adapting this will make river cleaner.” Another wrote, “I support you, brother.”

The responses reflect support for Bittu’s work and frustration over the obstacles he continues to face while trying to keep the river clean.

Keeping A River Clean Requires Public Cooperation

Bittu Tabahi’s efforts show the work involved in cleaning a polluted waterway, but his experience also highlights the limits of individual action. Removing garbage and placing dustbins can help, yet these measures cannot deliver lasting results if waste continues to be dumped irresponsibly or public facilities are damaged or stolen.

Regular waste collection, awareness among residents and action against littering could help protect the riverbank. Local authorities and communities also have a role in ensuring that waste disposal facilities remain available and usable.

For now, Bittu’s latest setback has drawn attention to the challenges surrounding his cleanup work. Keeping the Ajnar River clean will require more than one person’s dedication; it will also require people to take responsibility for the waste they generate.
