India successfully landed on the south pole of the moon with Chandrayaan-3. India is now the fourth nation to land on the moon, after the US, Russia, and China. ISRO’s Upcoming Missions

Let’s take a look at ISRO’s upcoming missions. These are ISRO’s next missions and their costs.

 

1. ADITYA-L1-2023

It is the first space-based observatory-class Indian solar mission to study the Sun. Further, the spacecraft will be placed In a halo orbit around Lagrangian point 1 (L1) of the Sun-Earth system. This is about 1.5 million km from Earth.
Moreover, the satellite placed in the halo orbit has the significant advantage of continuously viewing the Sun without any eclipse. This will further help in studying solar activities.

Expected cost: Rs 378 crores

Objectives

  • Understanding the Coronal Heating, Solar Wind Acceleration, Coronal Mass Ejection (CME), flares, and near-Earth space weather.
  • To understand the coupling and dynamics of the solar atmosphere.
  • To understand solar wind distribution.

 

2. NASA-ISRO SAR (NISAR) Satellite- January 2024

NASA

NISAR is a low-Earth orbit observatory jointly being developed by NASA and ISRO. NISAR will map the entire globe in 12 days and provide spatially and temporally consistent data. Furthermore, it will help in understanding changes in the Earth’s ecosystem, ice mass, vegetation biomass, sea level rise, groundwater, and many more.

As per ISRO, this flagship would have major contributions from both agencies. NASA is responsible to provide the L-Band SAR payload. While on the other hand, ISRO is accountable to deliver the S-band SAR payload.

Further, the observatory will be launched from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota. The target launch readiness date is January 2024.

Expected cost: $1.5 billion (approx 12,296 crores)

 

3. SPADEX-Third Quarter Of 2024

SPADEX, or Space Docking Experiment, is a twin spacecraft mission. ISRO is developing it. Also, this will mature technology related to orbital rendezvous, docking, formation flying, and other proximity operations with a scope of applications.

Moreover, the campaign would consist of two IMS-class satellites, one being the chaser and the other target. Both would be launched as co-passengers.

While preliminary studies in 2016, the Space Docking Experiment was approved by the government of India. Further, the initial Rs. 10 crores funding was cleared in 2017.

Expected cost: 124 crores

 

4. ISRO’s Mangalyaan-2-2024

Mars Orbiter Mission 2, also known as the Mangalyaan 2, is planned to launch by 2024. It is also mentioned that the Mangalyaan-2 will be found after the Chandrayaan-3.

The mission will also include a hyper-spectral camera, a high-resolution camera, and a radar to understand early Martin crust.

 

5. Gaganyaan-2024

Gaganyaan is India’s first human space mission. It is set to launch in 2024. Also, the human space flight ‘H1 mission’ will launch in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Expected cost: Rs 9023 crores

 

6. ISRO’s Shukrayaan 1-2031

ISRO’s Venus mission, called Shukrayaan l, was expected to launch by December 2024. However, the idea was born over a decade ago, in 2012.

However, optimal launch windows from Earth to Venus occur once every 19 months. This is why ISRO has ‘backup’ launch dates in 2026 and 2028.

Expected cost: Rs 500-1000 crores
