Pune’s daily commute is set to get a major boost as the city expands its Metro network with a new corridor connecting its prominent IT hub to central Pune. Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the much-awaited Pune Metro Line 3, also known as the Pink Line, on November 3. He also laid the foundation stone for four new corridors under Phase II.

The combined projects are estimated to cost around Rs 21,800 crore. While the Pink Line will start passenger services on November 4, the proposed Phase II corridors will extend Metro connectivity to several residential, commercial and employment hubs across the city.

Pune Metro Pink Line Connects Hinjewadi And Shivajinagar

Built at a cost of more than Rs 8,300 crore, the approximately 23-km Pink Line connects Maan with the District Court Metro station at Shivajinagar. The corridor will provide direct Metro connectivity to the Hinjewadi IT hub, which is home to thousands of professionals who regularly travel between the IT Park and other parts of Pune.

The new line will also connect with the existing Metro network, allowing commuters to switch between corridors and access more areas without depending entirely on private vehicles. One of its notable features is that the Pink Line will be operated entirely by women train operators. Around 30% of its electricity requirements are also expected to be met through solar power.

Passenger Services Begin From November 4

Following the inauguration, commercial passenger services on the Pink Line will begin at 6 AM on November 4. However, commuters will initially have access to 17 of its 23 stations. The remaining stations will become operational in phases. Two stations are expected to open towards the end of November 2026, while the remaining four are targeted for completion by January 2027.

The corridor is expected to provide considerable relief to employees working in Hinjewadi, along with residents and other daily commuters travelling towards Shivajinagar.

Along with inaugurating Line 3, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for four additional corridors under Pune Metro Phase II. The expansion is estimated to cost around Rs 13,500 crore. The proposed corridors include Lines 2A, 2B, 4 and 4A. Lines 2A and 2B will together cover approximately 12.75 km. Line 2A will connect Vanaz with Chandani Chowk, while Line 2B will extend from Ramwadi to Vitthalwadi. The 25.52-km Line 4 will connect Kharadi with Khadakwasla. Meanwhile, Line 4A will cover approximately 6.12 km between Nal Stop and Manik Baug.

More Areas To Get Metro Connectivity

The expansion will bring several important residential, commercial and employment locations closer to the Metro network. These include Kharadi, Magarpatta, Hadapsar, Swargate, Manik Baug, Nanded City, Pune Cantonment and Warje.

The Ramwadi-Vitthalwadi extension is particularly important for people travelling towards Kharadi and Wagholi, two rapidly developing areas with growing residential and IT activity.

The planned corridors will also connect with the existing Metro network and intercity bus services. Interchange facilities at Swargate, Nal Stop and Kharadi Bypass are expected to make transfers between different transport services more convenient.

Pune’s Metro Network Gets A Major Expansion

The inauguration of the Pink Line and the launch of Phase II mark an important step in Pune’s public transport expansion. The new corridor is expected to make daily travel easier for IT professionals and other commuters, while the four proposed routes will extend connectivity to more parts of the city.

However, the larger impact will depend on the timely completion of the remaining stations and proposed corridors. Better integration with existing public transport will also be important to encourage more people to choose the Metro over private vehicles.
