Some journeys are planned for business. Some for holidays. And then there are journeys driven purely by curiosity. One Bengaluru man decided he didn’t want to just read about history being made. He wanted to witness it with his own eyes. His decision to fly across states just to experience the opening of India’s newest Navi Mumbai Airport has now caught the internet’s attention.

What started as a simple flight reservation became an adventure motivated by pure curiosity. A Bengaluru man purchased his ticket two months ago for a reason unrelated to travel or business meetings. He wanted to see history being made. The tourist chose not to wait for major announcements or formal openings as India’s eagerly awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport drew nearer. Rather, he packed his bags and traveled across states to personally see the airport’s development. This action has since garnered attention on the internet and spurred discussions about enthusiasm, aviation, and the extent people would go to pursue their passions.

Bengaluru Family Books Flight Months Ahead Just To Experience NMIA’s Grand Opening

An important milestone for Maharashtra’s aviation infrastructure was reached on Thursday, December 25, when the Navi Mumbai International Airport formally started commercial operations. In addition to its size and style, the launch was notable for the excitement of its first passengers.

Ram Prasad was one of them. He and his family traveled from Bengaluru after purchasing tickets almost two months in advance, not just for business or pleasure but especially to visit the just-opened airport. When the family arrived on IndiGo flight 6E460, which touched down at NMIA at 8 am, they were welcomed with a ceremonial water cannon salute, which is only performed on exceptional inaugural flights.

Prasad told ANI that the trip was only intended to explore the airport. “We traveled from Bengaluru only to visit the airport in Navi Mumbai. We’ll visit a few locations in Mumbai during our two-day trip before heading back,” he stated. He described the event as unforgettable, adding that his daughter was welcomed as the first passenger and that Gautam Adani, head of the Adani Group, personally met the passengers.

“I purchased the tickets two months ago. I’m really pleased with how professionally everything was handled,” he remarked.

NMIA’s first departure, IndiGo flight 6E882 to Hyderabad, took off at 8:40 am, shortly after the first arrival, marking another milestone.

Sunil Bajaj, another traveler, expressed his enthusiasm as well, describing the airport as “futuristic.” He complimented the large driveway and overall layout, saying that it was unique to see an international airport in Navi Mumbai at last.

A public-private partnership is being used to create the 2,866-acre Navi Mumbai International Airport. Adani Airports Holdings Limited subsidiary of Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), owns 74% of the business, with CIDCO holding the remaining 26%.

In its first month of operation, the airport will handle 23 planned departures and run 12 hours a day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. NMIA will start operating around the clock in February 2026 and expand its flight schedule to accommodate the growing demand for air travel. The airport is anticipated to handle up to 90 million people annually once it is fully operational.

The opening of Navi Mumbai International Airport is more than just the launch of a new aviation hub. It reflects India’s growing infrastructure ambitions and the excitement such milestones generate among ordinary citizens. Ram Prasad’s carefully planned trip from Bengaluru, made months in advance just to witness this moment, shows how deeply these developments resonate beyond frequent flyers. With its modern design, ambitious capacity goals, and warm ceremonial welcome, NMIA is not just an airport. It is a symbol of progress, connectivity, and the joy of being present when history takes flight.
