Authorities claimed that a small aircraft attempting to land at Kalispell City Airport on Monday afternoon crashed into a parked plane, starting a massive fire, but fortunately, resulting in no significant injuries. The Federal Aviation Administration and Kalispell Police Chief Jordan Venezio said the single-engine aircraft carrying four individuals was attempting to land at the Kalispell City Airport at around 2:00 p.m.

According to Kalispell police, an initial investigation revealed that the pilot lost control and crashed onto the runway before the plane collided with numerous parked aircraft, setting several planes on fire before it was put out. The fire spread to a grassy area, according to Venezio.

The accident caused damage to many airplanes and sparked a fire that spread to a neighboring grassy area. The landing plane caught fire, but the pilot and three passengers were able to escape safely before the flames consumed it. According to Kalispell Fire Chief Jay Hagen, two passengers were treated on the spot after suffering minor injuries.

The hit was like “sticking your head in a bass drum and somebody smacked it as hard as they could,” according to Ron Danielson, who owns a local inn. The air was soon filled with thick clouds of black smoke.

According to Kalispell Fire Chief Jay Hagen, witnesses reported that a plane collided with another aircraft after landing at the end of the runway.

When it stopped, the passengers were able to exit on their own, Hagen added. According to him, two were treated at the airport after suffering minor injuries before heavy smoke plumes engulfed the region. Ron Danielson, the manager of a nearby inn, claimed to have heard and witnessed the crash.

“It sounded like if you were to stick your head in a bass drum and somebody smacked it as hard as they could,” he claimed.

FAA Confirms TBM 700 In Aircraft Crash

The FAA determined that the aircraft was a Socata TBM 700 turboprop. According to FAA records, it was constructed in 2011 and is owned by Pullman-based Meter Sky LLC. A call for comment was not immediately answered by company executives.

According to aviation safety consultant Jeff Guzzetti, who previously worked as a crash investigator for the FAA and NTSB, crashes involving planes colliding with parked aircraft occur occasionally in general aviation.

Although the horrific crash at Kalispell City Airport left damage all over the runway and a thick layer of smoke in the air, no one was killed, which is somewhat consoling given the loss of multiple aircraft. Emergency personnel responded quickly, treating the injured on the spot and putting out the fire before it spread.
