The layoff wave in the technology industry never seems to end! Following shocking job losses at TCS, Microsoft, and Meta, another big software giant has sent pink slips to hundreds of employees, and no, it’s not Infosys, Oracle, or even NVIDIA. The surprise name has business insiders buzzing and employees across the sector concerned about what happens next.

Google, the American giant tech company, has once again laid off hundreds of workers. These layoffs occur as Google increases its focus on artificial intelligence (AI) to cut costs. According to rumors, the corporation has cut off around 100 employees in design-related roles in its cloud unit.

According to CNBC, the layoffs have disproportionately impacted the “Quantitative User Experience Research” and “Platform and Service Experience” divisions. These teams are largely responsible for understanding user behavior, conducting surveys, and data research, and incorporating the results into product development.

Google has decreased the size of its cloud design teams by up to half in certain situations. The biggest number of layoffs have happened among employees in the United States. According to rumors, Google has given its laid-off staff until December to locate new positions.

Google Pushes AI Drive, Expands Layoffs Across Multiple Divisions

Google’s move comes as the corporation makes rapid progress toward artificial intelligence (AI). Since the beginning of 2025, the corporation has offered voluntary retirement packages to employees in some of its US-based units.

Managers responsible for small teams are being let go, and employees are being urged to incorporate AI further into their work. Over the last few months, Google has conducted layoffs and buyouts across numerous sectors, including human resources, hardware, advertising, search, finance, and commerce.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest IT giant, is decreasing its global workforce by around 2%, potentially affecting around 12,000 employees. However, the corporation argues that this decision is not the result of AI-based efficiency increases. In a recent interview with Money Control, TCS CEO K Krithivasan stated that the layoffs are taking place due to a lack of choices for redeploying personnel who do not meet current project needs. He stated that the organization is still actively hiring and training employees, but some positions, particularly at the mid and senior levels, are difficult to fill.

Sundar Pichai Signals Efficiency Push As Google Accelerates AI Investments

Sundar Pichai, the company’s CEO, has repeatedly told employees that Google “needs to become more efficient than ever as we scale up.” His statement makes it obvious that the layoffs are part of the company’s long-term strategy. Google has invested considerably in AI infrastructure in recent months, keeping it ahead of competitors such as Microsoft and Meta.

Google isn’t the only tech company making layoffs. Microsoft previously laid off 9,000 people in July. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has been rolling out phased layoffs since 2023. In India, TCS has announced the layoff of around 12,000 people, or about 2% of its total workforce.

The latest wave of layoffs at big digital businesses demonstrates a clear shift in the industry: companies are restructuring to prioritize efficiency, AI integration, and strategic growth while continuing to hire in some areas. While employees suffer uncertainty, these changes represent a larger push toward automation, skill specialization, and remaining competitive in an increasingly AI-driven market. Adaptability and upskilling are more important than ever for the tech workforce as the industry navigates this new period of transformation.
