Sheetal Devi, an 18-year-old Indian archer, made history on Saturday by winning the women’s compound individual gold medal at the Para World Archery Championships.
India extended her great run at the Para World Archery Championships on Saturday, September 27, defeating Turkey’s top-ranked Oznur Cure Girdi 146-143 to win gold in the women’s compound individual event at Gwangju.
This is Sheetal’s third medal at the event. She had previously won a mixed team bronze medal with Toman Kumar, defeating Great Britain’s Jodie Grinham and Nathan MacQueen 152-149. Sheetal and Sarita won silver in the compound women’s open team event after losing to Turkiye in the final.
Perfect Final Round Seals Historic Win For Sheetal
The first set ended tied at 29-all, but Sheetal Devi proved her class in the second, shooting three perfect 10s to win 30-27. The third end finished even at 29-29, maintaining her two-point lead.
Her lone slip occurred in the fourth end when she managed 28 as Girdi fought back a point, closing the gap to 116-114. Despite the strain, Sheetal executed a flawless final end, firing three perfect arrows to win her first individual world championship gold.
Previously, she overcame Great Britain’s Jodie Grinham 145-140 in the semifinals to set up a rematch of the 2023 Pilsen World Championships final, which Girdi narrowly won 140-138. This time, Sheetal took the opposite approach and emerged victorious.
Turkish Duo Outshoots Sheetal-Sarita To Take Gold
Sheetal Devi and Sarita started strong in the compound women’s open team final but were eventually beaten 148-152 by the Turkish combo Oznur Cure Girdi and Bursa Fatma Un. The Indian pair started brightly, winning the opening end 38-37 and landing three 10s on their first four shots. However, the Turkish squad rallied in the second half, shooting three 10s and a nine to tie the game at 76-all.
Momentum shifted in the third end as the Indian duo struggled with nerves, scoring only 36 points to Turkey’s 37. In the end, Girdi and Un shot a near-perfect 39 out of 40 while the Indians shot 36, with one arrow landing in the 7-ring, giving Turkiye the gold by four points.
